The Girl that broke my Hand

The Girl that broke my Hand

I had just met up with my future landlord at his house in Hammersmith and was headed back home to Chelsea. I thought I’d be able to hail a cab at the roundabout and so that’s where I headed. Naturally, it was drizzling light rain. This was London after all.

As I stood on one corner of the roundabout, hand in the air, I saw a light blue Citroen 2CV entering on the far side. One moment that seemed to last an eternity our eyes met. I was transfixed. She proceeded to enter the traffic in the roundabout and our eyes lost contact. Hand still in the air, another car exits the roundabout on my corner. I think he wanted to teach me a lesson as he smashed into my hand with the side of his car. I felt no pain. Just the urge to run as fast as I could to catch the Citreon. That quaint blue car had been swept up in the traffic and was desperately trying to make an exit. And then it was gone.

I did catch a cab just minutes later, but off to a nearby hospital was I. My hand suffered multiple fractures. ‘Twas no big deal. Those 5 seconds when eyes meet with a complete stranger were etched in my memory. I have no idea whether the girl was pretty, intelligent, fun, or even single. I just knew she had a cool car, and we had a connection.

That was exactly 30 years ago today, but I remember the moment as if it happened just minutes ago. As I watch my hand typing these words, I see the scar she left.

She was, and always will be, the girl that broke my hand.

I don't remember the Dauphene. Maybe the British govt had the sense to ban it from my country. I just read that it was originally to be named the Corvette!

The Dauphine was an interesting car too my dad told me he had two of them, the 2CV was an iconic car not for its design but for its affordability and robustness there is a strong cultural element with this car too and it is perfectly understandable that it can be seen as ugly and basic from the outside :-)

Dean Owen - please understand that I do not in anyway derogate the Citroen 2CV, as it may have been the most reliable, perhaps the only reliable automobile ever built in France. Does anyone have the bad fortune of remembering the Renault Dauphene? It would give Lada a run for its money when it came to unreliability.

I think I will wait for the rebuke before agreeing with you! :)

Funny how these fleeting moments sometimes stay in our minds for ever, particularly unfulfilled ones. Still, it's better she unknowingly broke your hand than knowingly broke your heart, or worse still ran off with half your fortune? As for the car, I'm with Phil Friedman! ☺️

and if indeed you did run out of gas, there was always the reserve bicycle peddles !

Dean Owen, ugly is not bad. As I remember, it was also the slowest with less acceleration than an ass headed uphill in the Alps. But in its favor, I think you filled the gas tank on the day you got it, and never had to again. :-)

Thanks Phil. A bit harsh on the car though. It is the only car that perfectly matches a baguette and beret. And still much prettier than anything to come out of the Lincoln factory these days!

Nice piece, Dean Owen. Although the Citroen 2CV was I believe awarded "Ugliest Car in History" in the 60s, a title that I believe still stands, I'm sure the girl was beautiful and the fantasy, however fleeting, worth the pain. Good fun. Cheers!

That would be a cool first car to have! With it breaking down all the time, you'd really learn mechanics fast!

Oh good. I am glad she ended up happy. I did manage to catch a glimpse of the back of the car as she drove away. Noticed a sticker "I don't need kids, I married one!"

She stopped at the next traffic light. I got in. We have been happily married for over thirty years! The 2CV ran well for a while but like all things, it finally gave up the ghost!

I think you are right Michele Williams. Very rare, but almost precious. Not love, but a connection. Thanks for reading.
