EVERYBODY'S STRUGGLING - by Devesh Bhatt

537c85f1.jpg

Everybody’s struggling. One such thought on a foggy Delhi morning and the day became bearable. It was going to be a long day with a busy schedule, but it was bearable. It was so busy that there was little time to breathe. Made me wonder, who on earth would want to breathe this polluted city air.

Everything had been compromised for the struggle. By this time the word struggle had gained my attention. I did not want to prepare anymore for the meetings. I figured why not go with the flow of thoughts? Depressing thoughts, but I had faith, imagination would rescue me.

I started from my childhood days. All those years of fortunate quality education had tried to grill me into being different, but I wanted to make friends and I wanted to be like them, I struggled.

Just then, there was a distracting article that came up on social media about insect/bug based foods. I suddenly remembered all the unique experiences of trying to be like friends and all the obnoxious things I had eaten. Different experiences nonetheless, part of the unique.

As I grew older I realized I was different, but the urban social life tried to grill me into being similar and blend in, again I struggled. Strangely, the motives had changed but the struggle remained. Whether genuine, or a pretense, the struggle was everywhere.

Cultural heritage, Government work and consumer troubles, were all reduced to the protocol of struggle. Diverse people, from a country like ours came to a city and within its confines, got reduced to the similar, predictable struggle or the obsession to keep on struggling. With such a variety in faiths/Gods, the creations of their images i.e. us looked pretty much the same.

Those with means pretended to struggle and those without means struggled to pretend for acceptability or isolation. Then there were the privileged few who pretended to be different, but only within the acceptable classifications of differentiation. The pretence wasn’t spontaneous, it too was a struggle.

Then I almost had these thoughts. The city was our new God and society was its corruptible high priest. A God who seemed to reward those who lost faith in themselves, accepted the parameters of acceptance and surrendered to its ways.

But wait…this is the same old context, the one used to blame the Old Gods and the old societies. None of this is part of the equation. It sounds good, people may identify with it and maybe accept it as a reflection of life but this is just nonsense.

What isn’t nonsense is the correlation.

We are people bouncing back and forth, again and again. First to gain an identity, then to lose it to please the crowd, then to project a new identity to refresh the crowd, then avoid overkill to please the crowd, then regret the loss of true identity, then jump back into the rehashed role etc etc.

This is people acting like organizations. An organization is an artificial person, an image created artificially; it has the motive of collective responsibility and the resourcefulness to carry out that responsibility with collective effort. It has the scope to deviate in its image/brand from its actual offering and still make it through.

That scope doesn’t exist for individuals. So one doesn’t have to imitate organizations in branding, we will merely bounce around losing our credibility.

Many organizations have the same offerings, yet sustain themselves solely on the basis of brand appeal.

Many individuals fail to sustain themselves purely on branding; they need a unique product offering. No two people are the same; obviously the offerings can be different with personal involvement, so every aspect of the business, the offering and the image, are extensions of the personal self.

I’ll just leave it at this, will come up with a focused article on the same which bears utility. I also think I will filter out the struggling bit for my book.

Why posted this article? I thought I will experiment for a change. CityVP 🐝 Manjit,  i never liked the idea of you experimenting on me, but i did like the idea of experimenting so i am posting a spontaneous article. CityVP 🐝 Manjit, i thought i can try to stretch spontaneity here. Ali Anani, just my first attempt to see how correlations feel, yours are very relational and coherent, this is an attempt. Lisa 🐝 Gallagher, weird food brought back a lot of thoughts.

I just penned random thoughts to lighten the load. It helped get an idea that is presentable.

I think this thought will help me bounce back to the hills with ease, possibly with a good impression on potential clients.

It also reinforces a thought:

ALIGN WITHOUT IMITATION BUT NEVER IMITATE WITHOUT ALIGNMENT

and a possible  Fractal Thought :  Let the struggles trigger imagination and the imagination transform the struggles. Lisa 🐝 Gallagher

the worth of struggle hmm. It makes a lot of sense when the objective is clear. This one was written last year i guess. Days are brighter. It is clear now, the caution is not to make the struggle an objective in itself. True, cant change people, but getting more ideas and interactions is getting to be fun, specially with you Melissa Hefferman. Their is certain comfort in everythig you say. Things fall in place.

well it's the social conditioning more than a struggle in a true sense :) the real struggle sometimes slips by camouflaged

Pamela \ud83d\udc1d Williams , very insightful article. Looking at the nuances it is indeed gaslighting, But I can't help and correlate with marketing and philosophies In marketing and sales we are told to persist like water and the rocky customer will given, to be like water implies we are soft and not aggressively persistent. In local sayings, an advice always comes up, be like water, the rock may ripple you or create a splash, but it merely gives you a new view, which you take within your fold. ( I figured the new view comes with the new reflections of the ripples). Now gaslighting looks at a bilateral relation, what if we assume the countless social waves bearing similar ideas hitting us and we become hard as a rock to save ourselves, their persistence will win. Give or take, in times of confusion, fear and doubt, Try to be like water, water can take the blow and change the entire landscape, it doesn't project a strong exterior but holds a deep interior :) Somehow Gaslighting is good for observers but in application it may heighten the paranoia unless someone is well-read. Just saying. I think our interactions would yield a lot of ideas. Affinity across different threads has been realised :) Thanks a lot, I just remembered you were the first to read me on Bebee :)

Thank you dear Devesh Bhatt and your writing individual has bartered self for acceptance and society has bartered itself for control, both usually consume each other without a desirable outcome" is simply superb. You got me interested in exploring this in more depth.

I would rather imagine clouds, oceans, rivers, trees etc as people but legally a Corporate is an artificial person with all the rights of a person vested in it. Legally it is a great idea, on a different note, when we get nicknames of Ferrari or bulllet or Colgate ka chota packet etc it's fun and games, but we may casually slip into this approach of imitating objects and organisations without even knowing it. Something I wish to discuss in my next post, just pruning it to be logically consistent.

ank you for the keen observations on some expressions of observation :) I look forward to your post. Another curious thought, what Ali Anani states as a relationship, and in the technical sense even contracts and transactions are relationships, in the social sense absence of the relation from self, individual has bartered self for acceptance and society has bartered itself for control, both usually consume each other without a desirable outcome simply because they are conditioned to barter when there is no need, individual is already part of the society and society already has the authority to.control.

the struggle is a part of life, not the purpose of it.

Great post @Devesh Bhatt! First, let me thank Ali Anani for bringing your post to my attention. Dr. Ali mentions that there may be a paradox when you write, "...motives changed, but the struggle continued..." and Dr. Ali refers to "an embedded paradox here: why motives cause us to struggle?" I have to think further of the actual paradoxes involved but my first reaction is to see that the thread of "motivation" is entwined with that of "struggle". Thanks Dr. Ali for pointing out this interesting relationship. I would like to highlight a few other interesting lines you write @Devesh Bhatt: "...pretended to struggle and those without means struggled to pretend..." A very well written and keen observation. Then you describe the following process re identity: "First to gain an identity, then to lose it... then to project a new identity... then regret the loss of true identity..." A process worth exploring. And finally, the synchronicity of it all, I am currently writing a buzz inspired by the work and discussion of the work by Dr. Ali on the "corporate body"; the relationship between the organization and the individual, and here you write, "...people acting like organizations. An organization is an artificial person..." Another keen and well written observation. Wishing you all the success with your book and future posts.

they did bring up good memories too, but good memories are associated with learning, it's been a personal experience. Problems on the other hand have been shared problems.

I hope the 'weird food' buzz brought up good memories too Devesh Bhatt. I have to tell you, I live in a valley surrounded by Mountains and many mornings are filled with fog. I find it appealing. As for Organizations, our Supreme Court in the US determined and voted that "Corporations are people." That's always been a hard pill for me to swallow. I like your random thoughts and thanks for the mention. My bug blog veered from the topics I normally write about. It was fun. Who knows, I may eat my words and try a few one day- no pun intended.

please..I just read my article backwards because I thought you had done it and discovered something interesting. I found it really interesting how I had inverted a lot of things and built a context to justify them. It also reflected the past experience of questioning certain advice...some went well and some went bad... What's more interesting is that I've inverted the ones that went good and metaphorically inverted the ones that went bad. Hence I feel a disconnect from your present question...you have got me self involved in a different direction

imagination triggers struggles...implying that i follow orders and not imagination. Spontaneity is an experiment and not experiment for spontaneity. Offering is actual from branding..etc etc
