5 Tips to Keep Your Body and Mind Young

For centuries, the search for the fountain of youth has spanned the entire globe. While this fountain is a myth, trying to keep your body younger for longer has become the modern day version of this. Studies have shown that regular exercise accompanied by good nutrition can keep the body years, sometimes decades younger than a person actually is, but what else can make a positive impact to help turn back the clock? Lots! Read on to see five ways you can easily improve your health and keep yourself as young as possible.

Exercise Your Brain

Many people know to exercise their bodies, but fail to do the same for their brains. Studies have shown that when you use your brain in unaccustomed ways more blood begins to flow into many areas of the brain, new neural pathways are more likely to form and can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Brains need to be consistently engaged for the benefits to continue. To do this, find more ways to engage your brain including doing puzzles or learning a new skill. 

Socialize

Communication and socialization are key indicators of mental health in old age. The more social a person is and the more they feel they belong to a group, the healthier they tend to be when they become older. The more diverse relationships a person interacts with including friends, family, and new acquaintances also helps to prevent cognitive decline in old age. 

Regular Exercise

Inactivity can lead to muscle loss, fat gain, decreased cardiovascular health and so much more. By maintaining an active lifestyle, whether that be gardening, running, or sports, you can offset some of the more adverse effects old age can wreak on the body. Exercise not only keeps your heart, lungs, and body younger, but it can also increase mental function. 

Stretch Regularly

One of the most common complaints as people age is loss of mobility. Incorporating stretching into your routine can help prevent the loss of flexibility as you get older. Combat tissue deterioration, muscle shortening, and joint stiffening with simple stretches a few times a week! Your joints and muscles will thank you in both the short and long run but being less creaky and stiff!

Protect Your Skin

The sun’s rays are constantly beaming down on the earth and provide wonderful benefits to plants, but can have adverse effects on your skin. The more your skin is exposed to the sun’s rays without protection, the more it will age your skin. Freckles, wrinkles, age spots, and a leathery appearance.

Great article! When most people think of staying fit, they think in terms of physically fit, but you're absolutely right that staying mentally sharp is important, too. I just read an article this morning about how being a reader can add two years to your life.
