Find Your Calm. Achieving Mindfulness in a Demanding World
You are on a beach at sunset, walking along the water's edge. The air is crisp and warm, smelling a little salty. The sky is clear with a few clouds. You feel a slight breeze on your face and see the waves coming in from the ocean. You sit down however you feel most comfortable; crossed-legs, laying down on your back, or sitting on a bench....
Take a slow, deep breath in and gently close your eyes. Begin to rest your mind and connect with the smell around you, the beat of your heart, the pace of your breathing, the consistent sound of the waves flowing in to shore. Tap into your feelings. Note to yourself if you are thinking about anything (which is a guaranteed yes). Allow the thoughts to come and then ~ let them pass by and bring your focus back to your breath, the sound of the waves, or the scent of the air ~ back to the present moment. The present time, where you are right NOW.
This is Mindful Meditation, the practice of paying attention to our thoughts, emotions and experiences without judgement. Mindful Meditation enhances self-awareness, self-acceptance and patience with ourselves and the bustle around us. It strengthens our resilience amidst uncertainty and adversity in a frantically changing and developing world. It is the perfect app to try if you have never meditated before. It will teach you, from the beginning basics, how to achieve mindfulness through meditation practice. A free version is available and what they offer with it is very generous. I started with the free version, but I when I began seeing and feeling the benefits of the practice actually affect me, I made the easy decision to purchase the affordable yearly subscription.
Calm offers a collection of meditation programs, mostly guided with the amazing Tamara Levitt as your Narrator and Content Developer. What you see in the image below are just a few of the programs & guides to choose from.
The week-long programs are the best to start off with because each day/session is about a different aspect on how to meditate. I suggest to start at this level because mastering meditation does call for an educational curve, especially if you have high anxiety or you are naturally a tense person. The programs can also be fun because once one is complete, you feel a sense of accomplishment from everything you learned and sticking with it. The guided sessions range from 5 minutes to 30 minutes and you can choose the duration depending on your schedule so there are no excuses.
My personal favorites: The Daily Calm, Deep Sleep Relax, Anxiety Release and Gratitude (not pictured above).
