Good Humor

7381b159.jpg

A humorous post lights up my day. It shifts my outlook on the world and on that which happens to us all. A funny post relaxes, makes us smile, gets us to breathe a bit more, and yes, most probably makes us happier.

Dale Carnegie said: “People rarely succeed unless they have fun at what they are doing. ”Finding fun in the often serious work we do, maintains perspective. To find hilarity in ourselves, we need to step out of ourselves. In the words of Oscar Wilde: “It is a curious fact that people are never so trivial as when they take themselves seriously."

But let’s be serious. What's so funny?

The philosopher Immanuel Kant wrote that humor arises from the sudden transformation of a strained expectation. It is the burst in tension when the incongruous jumps into awareness. Scholars of the jocular look at the core of what we find comical and say humor has three components: wit, mirth, and laughter. Wit is the cognitive experience, mirth the emotional experience, laughter the physiological experience.

Humor is an angle of perception that enables us to experience joy in the moment even when faced with adversity. Like beauty being in the eyes of the beholder, humor is in the funny bone of the laughee. This to me is heart of the matter:

“Humor is something that thrives between man's aspirations and his limitations. There is more logic in humor than in anything else. Because, you see, humor is truth." - Victor Borge

Now let’s play.

On BeBee there are many who write and publish with fine wit. Here are a few:

Paul Walters

One of the classics on beBee, Tales from Paradise from chef and raconteur Ken Boddie

Friday’s would not be the same without  Randall Burns

She can be serious, and she can be very funny: Susan 🐝 Rooks (Well, do they?)

Above are a but a few witty reads on BeBee.

They humor me good.

And make my day.

Good to see this popping up again, Gert. On the subject of humour, I was just telling my wife how my dad jokes are like red wine. They get better with age. Hope this gets to you all right. She’s locked me in the cellar. ☹️

Good post, Gert. I will just add a quote I read recently, "You don't stop laughing because you grow old, you grow old because you stop laughing." We all need more laughter.
I laughed heartily at Robert Cormack's https://www.bebee.com/producer/@robert-cormack/delivering-the-first-sexbot-to-the-white-house

Good piece, Gert Scholtz. There's very little that doesn't make me laugh, whether it's sociological, pathological or presidential. Fortunately, we're here, able to laugh, and sometimes able to put it into funny prose. Nice list of writers here, all capable of putting humour where it belongs (until one of us gets arrested or sued). Until then, we can enjoy each other's fine words arranged in humorous and satirical fashion, and hopefully that makes everyone's day a little bit brighter (although Paul living in Bali really doesn't need any more brightness than he has already). Thanks for the post, Gert. Always enjoy your stuff.

Surely you must be joking! :-) JK, I loved this post! Surprised you didn't include me in the list though of the humorous bees. I guess my honey is just too serious, even though I never take myself too seriously when I produce it :-)

Thank You Gert Scholtz While I thoroughly enjoyed the post I didn't leave a comment as I'm not that familiar with the game. I worked with an English chef, (BIG Guy), in Toronto in the 80's who was a nut about rugby, played every weekend, and talked me into going to play with him. I said I would go and watch first, and take pictures. LOL, after watching I realized that I would probably never play as my sense of self preservation was too strong, but I used to go regularly with him to take photos. I have some friggin hilarious shots that personify your humorous dialogue here. I participate in more than enough other sports and physical activity to keep me in shape. :-) It is a great game though...

We should plan for the future Gerald to check-in to the same retirement home, for we will surely become the life of the party there when it is time for us to be two old codgers. Well, The Odd Couple was a comedy right?

Ian Weinberg A perfect dissection of that which tickles us: "“Humor happens when the operating system detects an error that other parts had overlooked. The brain's dopaminergic pleasure system rewards that survival-benefiting discovery with a jolt of mirth." Thank you Ian.

Great stuff Gert Scholtz ! An inspirational reminder to lighten up and see the world in brighter colours. And yes, they've said that one can only do my type of work if you have a sense of humour (one day I'll share some of the surgical jokes with you!). While we're on the subject, here's a description of humour from the neuro-science literature (in a previous buzz of mine): “Humor happens when the operating system detects an error that other parts had overlooked. The brain's dopaminergic pleasure system rewards that survival-benefiting discovery with a jolt of mirth.” Thanks also for the mention.
Thanks so much, Gert Scholtz, for including me here -- I try to post a Friday Funday post every week -- this week's is on puns, so for those reading this who might have missed it -- head on over! And I'm going to check out a couple of others myself.
Gert Scholtz thanks for this compilation. Laughing is always the best medicine.
