Trying to find the exit

Trying to find the exit

f69a5ac8.jpgIn many people oriented businesses one of the major goals is to encourage those who are trying to find the exit to instead try their product. The reality is that it is very similar in leadership and counseling. One of the greatest urges that have to be overcome is their urge to find the exit.

Many people who come for help or direction come because they “have to”. Seeking direction is not always the first option or even the second in many who finally end up at the door. So unfortunately a lot of their attention can be focused on seeking a way out, instead of listening to what they are being told.

So the obvious question is how do we “fix” that issue. I use “fix” because we all know we are truly not able to fix anyone we can only encourage different ways of thinking or acting. We can show the results of different styles of behavior or thinking, but the actions are up to them. So to encourage someone who finally made it to the asking stage to listen is the true task of the first moments of the conversation.

Now this is easier if you are their boss and you have one way something is done, just tell them how it is. Not life changing but potentially effective. But the point does carry over to the remaining opportunities. Are you the authority? Do you have an answer that will work? Can you direct them in the correct direction? If so and if this is clear, then listening is much easier because you are then answering their need.

The reason people look for an exit is generally due to the perception that what they need is not present. Perception is the issue more so than actual facts. Many people who know nothing have sold a vast amount because they sold the perception that they were the authority. (Think of most scam artists.)

So ponder what do people perceive when they enter your office or meet you in the hall? How do you present yourself? Why should they listen to you? A little thought and considered response can help people stop looking for the exit.

Blessings!
