2017 Porsche 718 Cayman PDK Automatic Transmission

2017 Porsche 718 Cayman PDK Automatic Transmission

The 718 Cayman and 718 Boxster a junior-grade sports vehicles driven the last year. You probably know that its mid-cycle modify went well beyond the nonfunctional nips and comestibles emblematic of vehicles entering midlife. In component to de rigueur fascia, headlight and taillamp transformations, each got brand-new sheetmetal stampings for all barriers and both door skins. Indoor improves included designed top dashboards, brand-new steering wheels and rewritten infotainment reasoning with more connectivity options and device sympathy.

The Boxster and Cayman also collected completely retuned bodies, enhanced brakes and even a newly overlapped quantitative name 718—to aid explain that they’re simply two deviations of the same version. But the most important changes by far were the substitution of the full, naturally aspirated 2.7- and 3.4-liter even-six motors with turbocharged 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter even-fours in the quality and S versions.

If you’re like us, you worried about how Porsche would maintain these vehicles’ spirited characters, so much of which populated in those mythical, mid-mounted even-sixes, with their high but delightfully bilinear energy (above roughly 3700 rpm) and richly mechanical sound coming from just behind one’s ears. Both brand-new four-cylinders are more mighty than their six-pot precursors, and the vehicles are supplied in an amount of version, transmission and body-style collections, with many good performance options to aid sharpen their boundaries. But we questioned if there may be a 718 cloying component that would make us forget all about the even-sixes of moment. Try-out every variation of 718. Four try-outs have already were on this tract, including a Boxster S with a six-speed manual transmission, a Boxster S with the PDK seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmssion, a regular Cayman with the six-speed manual and a pdk-supplied Cayman S.

Now, as we increase an ordinal set of try-out phenomenons and steering appearances to our 718 information, gathered from this sprinting Yellow Cayman with the PDK automatic transmission, we may have found that cloying component. Or at least one of the cloying places in the 718 extent. Much like 2014 Cayman S, this automobile moved $14,505 worthy of critical performance-enhancing options, including Porsche’s Sport Chrono collection, brake-based torque vectoring, adaptive plates with a beamy extent of regulate and a 0.4-inch-lower steer dimension, a sport gas exhaust system, 19-inch Cayman S wheels, a small (14.1 inches in length) GT Sport steering wheel, impressive sport rooms and the PDK transmission.

ZOOM, ZOOM, Porsche’s entry-level sports car now has a power output that starts with a “3” is worth celebrating. The last time Zuffenhausen brought us an engine this size was in the 924, with a motor that, in its original form and running with the U.S. emission controls, produced just 95 horsepower. How things have changed. Porsche says that even the base Cayman now is capable of returning a 4.5-second zero-to-60-mph time when specified with the optional PDK dual-clutch automatic gearbox and a 4.9-second run with the six-speed manual
