Does Content Matter? Using beBEE As A Springboard To Engage With Your Readers.

Don’t you just love Fridays?

I guess I am a little fortunate in that Fridays for me could be a Monday, a Wednesday or for that matter a Sunday. It’s a little bit cool to be a freelance travel writer!

A

My current Friday morning ritual entails getting up (sometimes a little hard, depending on the state of my debilitating condition of extreme sloth) grabbing a towel, laptop and journal and walking the vast 20 meters to the beach. Here I settle myself at a table on the sand, at my all time favourite café where the staff and I have become fast friends. ( management of course thinks I am at home performing mundane chores)

This is the three- hour Friday slot I allocate each week devoted to scanning and reading the ever- swelling plethora of posts that populate beBEE’s producer page. For me, this is few hours of entertainment as I devour some of the great writers on the site, and there are many!

132:

This morning I returned to a post entitled, BeBee, What To Post, What Not To Post, and re-read the content penned by the bearded founder of the platform, Javier 🐝 beBee

https://www.bebee.com/producer/@javierbebee/bebee-que-publicar-y-que-no-publicar

top letting
people who do
so little for you
¥ control so much

of your mind,
feelings and
emotions.

When I first read it I thought, great, this is exactly what I have been musing on for a couple of months now. With the sheer volume of posts appearing, I tend to whizz through the feeds looking for the likes of Jim Murray @ Shelly Brown Jim MurrayLisa 🐝 Gallagher, Dean Owen Gert Scholtz Lisa 🐝 Gallagher Ken Boddie and Pamela 🐝 Williams as well as several others who I haven't mentioned, but whose work I devour with gusto.

Their writing is succinct, informative and most of all original and entertaining. Their posts always capture my interest and more importantly, hold it!

Oryx

Lately however I have noticed more and more contributors have resorted to the ‘cut and paste’ habit and we are seeing stuff that is …dare I say it, boring! Many of the pieces I have already come across on other sites or in well -regarded publications.

To quote Javier;

Quotes and PlacardsbeBee is a professional networking website and is not Facebook, InstagramTwitter or LinkedIn and the quality of your content needs to reflect this difference. This is a quick and easy path to show activity and has become popular with some members on beBee. Remember, posting quotes from famous people does not reinforce your brand, it merely reinforces their brand versus yours.”

a6fb692e.jpg

I personally have no desire to linger over shots of a cute kitten in a bucket, or link to an amusing video on You Tube for, if I wanted to do that, all I have to do is to head over to Mr Zuckerberg’s site and I can get that sort of content in spades. Isn’t that what Facebook was originally created for?

Javier raises another good point in his piece:

“What you post on beBee also defines your personal and professional interests with your connections and will influence your visibility, your career growth and your business opportunities. Write articles that serve to inform, add value by sharing your knowledge and expertise, which in turn reinforces your brand message.

Please remember that on beBee, your connections do not want a direct sales pitch, rather, they want to be informed and inspired by your article.

People will read and follow your articles if they learn something that helps their business or enriches their lives. Stick to your areas of expertise. It's better to write about the two or three areas where you have in depth knowledge than try to write broadly about general business topics. This is about being known for what you know.

Use beBee wisely and you will enjoy professionally rewarding and profitable results.”

As a prolific producer on beBEE my stuff, I am reliably told, is ‘nice and fluffy’ as it generally revolves around travel or a tongue in cheek poke at myself or others, coupled with a humorous look at the world. Due to the original nature of the content, since I began posting on beBEE, I have been approached by several publications to write for them after they came across my writings on beBEE or the other sites on which I share my posts. (They obviously like nice and fluffy!)

So it’s nearly lunchtime and time to stop waxing lyrical, as I need a snack and a quick nap. (I’m in the tropics you understand!)

However, this morning I have digested a couple of wonderful pieces by Susan 🐝 Rooks, the Grammar GoddessGert Scholtz, Aleta Curry and Ian Weinberg as well as managing to type up this piece which makes me feel vaguely productive.

e91d28ed.jpg

I have of course, neglected my ‘real duties,’ as I have yet to begin a rather long commissioned piece on Casablanca but I fear my slothful condition has become rather too debilitating, meaning I shall have to retire to the horizontal position to think about it.

Paul v Walters is the best selling author of several best selling novels and when he is not cocooned in sloth and procrastination in his house in Bali he scribbles for several international travel and vox pop journals.

CityVP 🐝 Manjit Thank you . I do intentionally ridicule myself in many of the pieces I write. 'Nice and fluffy' was something my rather clever daughter said about ( what I thought ) was a serious piece about something or other. I perhaps watch too many Woody Allen movies or reat too many david Sedaris books as I feel I am picking up their habits ! Howver your kind words touch m deeply .

Content is king, as they say. Also, conteXt is a queen, in this case, something we often forget. Just wanted to share this with you all, since this buzz has inspired all sorts of insights in me lately...

I think the best testimony is the articles themselves, so I checked out an August 2016 piece about Jakarta also published by Oryx and from the first paragraph onwards a.k.a. "The early morning sun spears like an arrow through the buildings in old Batavia illuminating an old man hosing down the cobblestones while, across the square a restaurateur arranges chairs and tables on the pavement then pulls down a colourful awning ............" from http://www.paulvwalters.com/uncategorized/jakarta-a-city-where-simply-nothing-is-impossible Where in the eye of the beholder one see's "nice and fluffy" I see "rich and inviting". The key here is certainly not an academic treatise about travel, but a lived experience shared with the reader in a way which is virtual reality without the technology - and that is the best kind of VR - the one that stirs the imagination of our own minds. Now if people settle for less or even focus their attention at the level of branding, then it is an old verse of the self-limiting perceptions of personal branding, and again this simply exemplifies the consequences of operating at the level of sell, tell or yell, rather than stir one's own imagination and avidly seek to be shaken and stirred. So what I read in the Jakarta article is beyond brand, because the reader of that article is physically on route to a real travel experience. Reading of course is a great habit but imagination is what gives life to that habit and then habit is WHO WE ARE, not as a reader but as human being. So it is the next step is ours. Mine was discovering FX Harsono http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2015/01/29/fx-harsono-exposing-beauty-ugly-truth.html and we either find those linkages with virtual travel or physical travel, but what I learn here is 100% of the magic that should be travel.

Nice piece, Paul Walters, bright and unpretentious -- as always. I enjoy your writing for its lack of hidden agenda. And for the Openness it displays. As I sit here waiting to see if my home of more than two decades survives the week, it, I've been reading a number of your posts and feeling better for them. Thanks and cheers.

Hey Paul Walters I'm not going to envy you. BTW I do love the view. I know you've earned it all and alot of smart work has seated you where you are. Do keep throwing in tips now and then. I enjoy reading what you write, you have a way getting people to listen to you and stayed glued to what you write. There's always a breath of fresh air one could call it. Javier makes some great points which you've reiterated. Thanks for a lovely Friday cup of honey

I enjoyed reading your blogging buzz, Paul, as always. I commend you for reiterating the important points made by Javier 🐝 beBee, with which I fully concur. Here's a simple rule to help users those who might be stuck about what's appropriate to post, per Javier's excellent advice: IF IN DOUBT, LEAVE IT OUT!!!! This platform is fortunate to have such accomplished writers/authors like you, Paul, engaging and providing content on a regular basis. Ditto that for the other admirable bees named above in your post -- and so many more who do the same (a very long list). In short, beBee is what users make it. Thus, let's continue to make it professional and business-like, which is a win-win for beBee's brand image as well as our own personal branding. Lastly, I've pinned Javier's post to the top of my Twitter home page for easy retweeting at https://twitter.com/DBGrinberg Please spread the buzz! PS Paul -- per the comments by Jim 🐝 Cody below, I am likewise envious of the dream-like lifestyle you have diligently and impressively worked so hard to create for yourself. Thus, perhaps you can consider producing some honey advising us on how to follow in your big footsteps. Vamos!!!

Paul, a marvelous read on a Friday morning! I, too, have a Friday routine of publishing my regular blog and now two for beBee. The idea of generating ideas in the prone position does have great appeal however...

Thanks Don 🐝 Kerr buzz - this brought it into my feed. And YES - content is everything. Great suggestions from Javier 🐝 beBee But maybe this needs clarification: ** Relevant ** content is everything. Thanks for the reminder of why most of us are here in the first place.

Paul Walters "nice and fluffy" is not what comes to mind for me v.v. your contributions. "Exotic and transporting" seem more appropriate. I will agree with you heartily on the increasing amount of swill appearing here. I suppose this is inevitable as the site grows to include more folks seeking an outlet for - well, actually I don't know what for. This site attracted me first and foremost for the quality of material that it's members willingly contribute. That remains my primary source of attraction and as a by the way - I do apologize for the occasional kitten picture. When he cuddles up to my laptop on my rather small desk I have little choice but to pay attention!

Does content matters? Yes, relevant content always matters. Paul, your original content was relevant to several publications who noticed your writings on beBee and other sites. Maybe my articles don't help people with their business or enrich their lives, but I think they inform and above all reflect my personal and professional interest.

Paul Walters I am packing my stuff now and heading over to join you on the beach. Not a travel post but it certainly had the same effect on me! Well said Paul and a welcome reminder for those who post to strive for original and quality content. “Nice and fluffy”? Never thought that about your articles which I always find interesting and entertaining. Thank you for the kind mention and I hope to see you again on local shores in the future!

I look forward when beBee shall make it available to collect all linked articles in an e-Book so that we find them all in one place. Your buzzes are like scattered flowers and we need to have them in a bundle. I believe that CityVP 🐝 Manjit requested the same recently.

A great "spirit guide like you are Javier 🐝 beBee for she called you the spirit guide. It is unfortunate to me on a personal level that deviance of the basic guidelines of conduct as are highlighted in your links and in this wonderful buzz by Paul Walters have been negated on the comments section of my last two buzzes. I am not innocent at all because I got directly involved in these discussions. I leave it for the fellow bees to say who is not conducting himself. Truly, we need a constant reminder of the basic rules of conduct. I invite Milos Djukic to read this buzz because he wrote very wise comments on my last buzz reflecting his maturity.

Now, please enjoy that space on the beach and do save me a seat. Thank you Paul Walters and ou wrote a timely post. I don't know if you are hinting in any way o the discussions on my last two buzzes, but this buzz is completely reflective of those discussions. I thank you also of reminding us of the simple rules of conduct that Javier 🐝 beBee has laid down. Again, I wish all bee authors would abide by them. Unfortunately, this isn't the case. I shared the buzz hoping that it would serve as a reminder of the basics.
