‘Preserve Your Memories. They’re All That’s Left You.’

What is it that triggers a memory?

A hint of a smell this morning of jasmine embedded in a bar of hotel soap for some reason caused a flood of memories to suddenly invades my consciousness with visions as clear as day.

It was a time, so long ago and far away when the world was a lot younger than it is today. I was a smitten young man, hopelessly in love and in a fledgeling relationship doomed to fail. She was older, taller and altogether more worldly than I. A doctor destined for greatness and me, a student with many years of study ahead.

On a rainy Saturday morning, in the pre-dawn light, she whispered that it was time for me to go but to keep safe the memories of our time together. As I recall she said,” preserve your memories. They’re all that’s left you.” For months I held onto those words, thinking how profound they were, spoken by a woman so wonderful and wise until I discovered they were actually written by one, Paul Simon! Oh well, the phrase was poignant and still evokes memories, even today of that time.

It's funny how life goes.

Year pass and slowly you find yourself defined not so much by the things you do, but rather by the things you don’t do. I remember I was going to study medicine, learn to play the saxophone and a host of other things, too many to remember. One by one, I didn’t do those things as those ‘things’ didn’t happen and now- I am what is left.

I suppose I and everyone else who walks this planet are part of unfulfilled dreams and, of course, unfortunately, there is no way of changing the past.

In the end, we are perhaps merely the sum of our memories, but yet they define our lives and define who we are. Our memories are what moulds who we are on any given day, painstaking constructed brick by brick from memories from days long past. Though we need to ‘remember’ that some are not so reliable as are not memories elastic and malleable?

I am certainly not alone in having memories that we don’t wish to have- those that we would rather erase from our subconscious; I for one, have far too many to count.

On a more positive note, memories of true happiness are what makes living this life worth living but, even those can get lost in the thick forests of bad ones. When it actually boils down to it we are nothing more than the memories we keep- those of overwhelming joy, profound sadness, gratitude, pride, grief, despair, remorse, and passion.

However, the strongest of memories are those of love and of course of the most important of all…Hope.

Paul v Walters is the author of several best selling novels and while not cocooned in sloth and procrastination in his house in Bali he scribbles for numerous international travel and vox pop journals.

What a beautiful time capsule buzz Paul Walters The strongest of memories are those of love and of course the most important of all…Hope. I was nodding all the way in acknowledgment. The wisdom we gain from our memories is far beyond what any book can give us. The biggest lesson of learning for each of us and a difficult one too sometimes!

There is value in treasuring our memories because there is humanity in that. My online purposes I set my view of memories through the lens of "reflective thinking" This is why your buzz finds it's way into my "Gray Pathway". What makes this gray learning personally for me is the power a memory as "reflective thinking" where the value of the memory is how we individually step into those memories shoes. The result is no different to why the idea of mirror neurons fascinates thinkers, and the chief mirror neuron of your memories is how your story/buzz lets me experience something that was not my experience. For sure that is not meant to be a recipe for creating false memories within myself, but the antithesis of that, which is to enhance my own reflective thinking - so I thank you for this buzz, because it avails to this learning. Reflective thinking in this context is as much standing on the shoulders of the great, as appreciating and acknowledging what is a highly personal memory.

Love and Hope. They both leave us vulnerable and open and, because of that we learn and experience the most incredible things. Thanks for an article that stirred more than a few memories.

And so it goes Paul Walters, that the most painful memories are the greatest of teachers...and I'm not such a good study when it comes to learning from my mistakes....We hope not to repeat them, but we do....again and again...and with each mistake we come a step closer to 'wholeness.' The senses are are very powerful thing...they evoke in our hearts and minds all the experiences we have cataloged in the library of our minds;-) The smell of my father's favorite tobacco, lily of the valley for my mother...and the songs she used to sing play like a recording in my mind...When I acknowledge these wonderful things as the 'pennies from heaven' that they are, it brings me peace of mind...even in the most turbulent of times...Such as now, where I find myself struggling in a world full of 'no's' and 'sorry for you losses'....I am still comforted by the memories of those who have gone before me, but have never left my mind;-)

Lovely evocative piece, Paul Walters. I like to think memories are made of different threads; some soft, some rough and it is best not to get caught off guard in that garden!

I have memories of living in an apartment in Ealing (west London suburb) with a saxophonist in the flat below regularly disturbing my slumber. It might be too late to embark on a career in medicine, Pak Paul, but not too late to trade in that hammock for a life of ‘sax’ (‘a’ comes before ‘e’). But either apologise profusely to the neighbours or else take thee off to Goa Gadja to practice first. 🎼

Wholesome stuff Paul Walters I would submit that having not become a doctor should be regarded as one of your advantageous omissions! I was a ravishing brunette before embarking upon that journey! And yes, we are the sum of all our memories but we are also present in all that we've thought, said and done - we exist totally in the doing. And you continue to do good stuff - keep that feather well inked!
