Beware the Siren of Comfort...

Beware the Siren of Comfort...

2966f78b.jpgPutting aside the minor offences of breaking and entering, destruction of property, and theft (if you considering eating someoneā€™s porridge wrong), Goldilocksā€™ real crime was instilling the expectation of comfort ā€”

ā€œ This porridge is too hot; this porridge it too cold; this porridge is just rightā€

Ā ā€œThis bed is too hard; this bed is too soft; this bed is just rightā€

And for her efforts to be comfortable she doesnā€™t even confront the bears she burgled, but instead just ran away. I know theyā€™re bears, but stillā€¦ show a little backbone.

It isnā€™t just out of the blue I find myself maligning a cherished childhood story but instead itā€™s a transference after hearing about the membership response to an email from my local fitness club which was sent about the problems with the air conditioning. It never dawned on me that so many people required perfect conditions to engage in some physical fitness ā€” to suggest an increased risk of heat stoke because the temperature was 27 degrees instead of 22 degrees is more than just being misinformed about the tolerances of the human body. Even after the air conditioning was fixed I overheard a member say they turned the temperature down because they like it cool when they work out (I wonder if even Goldilocks would say, ā€œWTF?ā€). Maybe this has to do with the perceived rights that come whenever you pay for something ā€” much like the person who overreacts when they didnā€™t get enough cold foam on their Iced Double Cappuccino with Caramel and Cold Foamā€¦ and then insists on talking to the manager.

Iā€™m trying to wrap my head around people going to a place that by its very nature is meant to put their mind and body under stress, put undo burden on them (literally), and challenge themā€¦ but only if they are comfortable while doing it. Maybe itā€™s simply a misalignment of expectations or maybe theyā€™re not reading the same pithy motivational memes that I am.

Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā ā€œIf we're growing, we're always going to be out of our comfort zone.ā€ (from the Internet)
Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  ā€œMost everything that you want is just outside your comfort zone.ā€ (from the internet)
Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  ā€œTo the degree we're not living our dreams, our comfort zone has more control of us than we have over ourselves.ā€ (from the Internet)

Of course I want to be comfortable as much as the next person but itā€™s just a rest stop on an incredible journey for me ā€” at the very most itā€™s a place to reenergize, catch up on your sleep, and plan for your next adventure. When we get too comfortable we stop learning, growing, exploring , and doesnā€™t prepare you for anything..

Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  ā€œLean into the discomfort ā€” because Mother Nature isnā€™t really that concerned about how comfortable you are when you get outside.ā€ (I made this one up)

If my thinly veiled contempt for people who complain about the temperature is too cryptic, Iā€™d like to suggest the following pen and paper exercise ā€” draw a line down the middle of the paper; title the left side ā€œWhat Iā€™ve learned when Iā€™m in my Comfort Zone?ā€ and title the right side ā€œWhat Iā€™ve learned when Iā€™m out of my Comfort Zone?ā€ Take some time to fill it out and let me know if the right side isnā€™t more meaningful.

As a side note, itā€™s very hot out today.

Interesting insight Graham. My working out is mostly done at home, because the older I get the less a people person I have become. But I do agree with pushing out of your comfort zone. That's where the growth happens. Hope all is well up your way. I'd suggest another coffee you you, me & Rene, but Chathammight as well be the far side of the moon. LOL.

Food for thought in this one, Graham. They say that porridge keeps you regular, but only if the temperature's "just right". I must admit that, in today's paperless society, I'm way out of my comfort zone drawing lines on paper, so I'll withdraw into my Excel spreadsheet and let you know how it goes. By the by, all this talk about Goldilocks is disturbing my sleep. I'm having night-bears. šŸ˜±

While musing on comfort zones, this quote from the Monty Python Spainish Inquisition sketch. "No no not the comfy chair treatment" I'm sure some will think of the other line "No one expects the Spanish Inquisition" Well did you?

Graham, The way I see it, change is the only constant. Assuming you'll be comfortable...any time is wishful thinking. Relax. Go with the flow. Get in the zone...the reality zone. It may be uncomfortable but it ain't boring. And so it goes.

This is a lovely buzz Graham\ud83d\udc1d Edwards. I can tell you that discomfort taught me far more than comfort. The weight of the line is heavily tilted towards discomfort.
