0aec3e54.jpgThe four-day forecast was as follows — twelve degrees Celsius with rain; eleven degrees Celsius with rain; six degrees with sunny periods; two degrees Celsius with rain. In the part of the world where I live the temperature in February should be minus fifteen degrees Celsius on a warm day. Weather as abnormal as this definitely changes your plans about going snowboarding for the day; it instead has you spending an evening with friends (good food, wine, and conversation) and then heading back to the city early the next day (once you've confirmed it's gonna rain some more).
Man-made or not — the weather she is a changin'.

With little traffic on the road I was making good time, and as I came over a rise I lost control of the car — there was a real possibility I was going to spin into the oncoming lane and flip the car into the ditch. I did regain control of the car (as well as my composure) and continued on my way. My only explanation for what happened was I hit a patch of black ice that had formed because of the rain and near freezing temperatures.

It all happened in the blink of an eye.

As I drove on (a little slower I might add) I thought of a conversation we had the night before about our plans for the year; as I reflected on the conversation I became just a little melancholy over the lack of imagination on my part. I had been reminded this is all so very fragile, so the least I could do is be a little more imaginative with what I do.

You are so right Phil Friedman... my heart aches for what happened; in 1975 a student walked into my high school and killed three people including himself (and wounded over a dozen). Sadly those kids will carry the experience for the rest of their lives... I can still hear the shots every time something like this hits the air waves.

Black Ice is one of those stories you should include when speaking about the fragility of all things human. All of us can grasp the immediate adrenaline rush of the skid and most of know what it is like coming down from it but few heed the warning about other possibilities on the horizon. That is either a good thing or a bad one about human nature. I'm not sure which.

It is these incidents that "remind" us, bring us back to "reality" of the present, the moment that we usually overlook throughout our busy lives. Here in Northern Alberta we have plenty of black ice every year to constantly remind us of the "present", LOL. It sure gets the adrenaline pumping.

It's not just black ice that proves how fragile life is. Sometimes we are reminded, as well, by black hearts. As we in Broward County, Florida, USA learned recently.

I never had a spin until this year, when it was black ice that had me lose control of my car twice. in both cases it was fortunate that there was no oncoming traffic in the first incident and a snow bank I could brake into as I pulled really hard on the steering wheel to avoid crashing into a parked car on the other side of that road. In both cases I actually did not have control and only blind instinct is what I credit for getting me through these two moments. It did make me realize that traveling at "normal speed" in a ice-laden road perhaps was not the good idea I clearly thought it was. I agree it definitely shakes us up when it occurs and the second time around was as surprising as the first.
