Moments — you never know what you will see...

Moments — you never know what you will see...

As part of our Easter celebrations my lovely daughter took me to a baseball game — in fact, it was game three of the Toronto Blue Jays home opening series against the New York Yankees. Oh those dreaded Yankees...

1ebd3b4b.jpgLike North American football, baseball is one of the games I truly understand and find great enjoyment with — either as a fan or playing. Not only was I excited that was going to spend some time with my daughter but was going to spend it with her watching a live baseball game. I suspect by the fourth inning she was a little tired of me offering up facts, and figures, and trivia — I didn't care though because I was having fun (and I know she was too). We were leading 4-3 in the bottom of the 8th inning when it happened; something that first happened in 1899 and has only been accomplished by 41 players since*.

Kevin Pillar, the centre fielder for the Blue Jays, stole second base, and then he stole third base, and then, in dramatic fashion (to the roar of the crowd), he stole home plate to score a run. Caught up in the cheering, I remember thinking to myself that I had never seen that before. And in hindsight, probably never see again. You never know what you will see when you are out and about.

A good reminder to get out and about.

* Facts and figures are from the internet and although they may be a little inaccurate, stealing 2nd base, 3rd base and home base in the same inning is still really, really, really rare.

I am sure with Kevin Pillar's ability to catch a baseball, he would have the makings of being a great goalkeeper in soccer, being that a soccer ball is so much easier to see when it is flying towards you. If he chose to be a goalkeeper then the Netherlands should give him citizenship, because then with Kevin Pillar in the Dutch goal, they might have qualified for the World Cup :-) Trust a Spanish newspaper to cite why the Dutch did not qualify http://www.marca.com/en/football/international-football/2017/10/11/59de0e61e2704e6b668b45a4.html

Being an Aussie of Scots origins, Graham, I can’t say I know a lot about baseball. Having played other bat and ball sports, however, I know you have to swing a lot and miss quite a few before you connect. And, when you do, that sweet click you get on contact, and the woosh when the object of your focus travels far, is sweet music to the ears. Kind of like writing on beBee, don’t you think?

I caught a bit of the highlights of the Blue Jays game as I was more absorbed in the Chelsea vs Tottenham Premier League game, I did catch that there was great excitement and energy in the stadium, but I had no idea that this is what Kevin Pillar did - so now I must go back and watch those highlights with due and proper focus. Absolutely love his diving Superman catches - but was not aware that he has added this new heightened stolen base ability to his game.
