Are British rock bands better?

When it comes to truly universal rock music, British bands are still in a league of their own

In my humble opinion , the best bands ever come from the islands ( UK & Ireland )... Please don't take it seriously. It is only an opinion 😲. I also love a lot of american bands and music in spanish is trendy and it will become more important since spanish language is growing very fast.

American pop culture dominate the worldwide media, but when it comes to truly universal rock music, British bands are still in a league of their own, superior to their American counterparts in almost every respect.

The history of rock can be viewed as a kind of cultural interplay between the US and the UK, with amazing bands from both sides of the pond influencing and interacting with one another. 

I love US Bands like the Byrds, the Doors, the Velvet Underground, the Ramones, Talking Heads, Faith No More and Nine Inch Nails.

I love and admire them all.... but if you measure great bands per capita ...OMG  british ones are the largest list and  the most influencers ( The Beatles , The Rolling Stones ,..) 

We are not talking about solo artists here, which I regard as a special case. In solo terms, the US may be ahead of the UK. The US can boast Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen as undisputable universal greats.

My top bands

It is very difficult to do a list, but if I have to name my top bands are:

Queen - UK



So , In my case: UK(4), US(3), Ireland(U2) and Spain(1)

Now everyone here needs to also look up Cheap Trick too, played at Harlows Bar in Burbank, Illinois, USA. I was a doorman there and boy o boy the weekend crowds were unbelievable. They had dual drummers, my head is still pounding,,,.........................

There are plenty of amazing British bands to pick from, with names like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Clash, Oasis, Blur, and Queen, just to name some of the most famous ones.

No doubt. British bands are still in a league of their own. And if you include Ireland - U2, Cranberries, etc- , islands are unbeatable.

Great is an opinion genius is divine. In that class David Bowie had the complete career and took his curtain call from life by being artistic about his own death. The funniest story is where David Bowie said no to collaboration to Coldplay https://www.theguardian.com/music/2016/jan/20/how-david-bowie-turned-down-coldplay-its-not-a-very-good-song-is-it When it comes to great I am biased anyway for the simple reason that I was born in Britain so that means I can take a different view of great - and the great I love is "great music" no matter where it is in the world. What is truly great is supporting the revival of local music and fostering associated artist colonies. I do marvel how so many heavy metal bands originated from the Birmingham area of England, and then there are individual stories like Graham Gouldman of 10CC who wrote hits for other artists http://www.grahamgouldman.info/biography.html. The saddest thing about great is when greatness is taken away, and in this case an example is an American called Sam Cooke, who was shot to death at relatively young age, he had produced some great music through the Motown scene, but all that was lost in his killing cannot be contemplated https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-death-of-souls-king-remembering-sam-cooke-50-years-after-his-death-1418168242 and even his death could be interpreted as one thing but the actual account takes a great twist and the writer of this piece ends it with probably something more closer to the truth.

Music was the UK's top export back during these bands prime. But hey, how old are we to be talking about these oldies. Let's give a mention to some great more recent British bands! Franz Ferdinand, Coldplay, Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys, Snow Patrol, and yes, even Atomic Kitten!

This looks more like my list, i could have said that if i was older.#18 got almost all the rest. If i were to add Thin Lizzy and T Rex. Universal in the subcontinent with the rest :)

For classic rock, I believe the Brits are better. My favorite bands are Pink Floyd, U2, and Led Zeppelin. For the past 25 years, though, I vote for American rock: Foo Fighters, Linkin Park, Imagine Dragons, Avenged 7 Fold, , Panic at the Disco, Pop Evil, Cage the Elephant... Javier \ud83d\udc1d beBee being a Smashing Pumpkins fan, you might want to give Silver Sun Pick Ups a try ("Panic Switch", Lazy Eye"). They have a sound heavily influenced by S.P., but with a vocalist who does not cause my ears to bleed.

Another great list. I have to say that the Brits were the better band overall - especially when I scan my vinyl collection. How could you not love the classic bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, and The Kinks? I would also place the following on my list: The Moody Blues; Yes; Emerson, Lake, and Palmer; King Crimson; Jethro Tull; Genesis; Peter Gabriel; The Police; and Sting......could go on and on I guess....

Ken Boddie great list. I don't know why british rock music is ahead. We still say "groups" - grupo instead of bands. We use "band" for say " una banda de pájaros" ..a bunch of birds

Blasts from the past, Javier. My all time favourite bands are, in no particular order, the Beatles, Stones, Who, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd and Queen, only one of which is American and another an Anglo-American composite. Incidentally, can someone tell me when we stopped referring to musical entertainers in the plural as groups and started calling them bands? Perhaps this came about in the 70s? As they say, "if you remember the seventies, then you probably weren't there".
