Marketing and branding are two of the major "buzz words"  that we use in the industry.

Your brand is who you are. Marketing is your message.
Branding comes first, marketing second.
You own your marketing; your consumers own your brand.

Branding is why. Marketing is how.

Branding is long-term. Marketing is short-term.

Branding is macro. Marketing is micro.

Branding defines trajectory. Marketing defines tactics.

Branding drives an enduring reputation. Marketing drives periodic sales.

Branding is the reason someone buys. Marketing is the reason someone thought to buy in the first place.

Branding builds loyalty. Marketing generates response.

Branding creates value. Marketing extracts values.

Branding is the being. Marketing is the doing.

Branding is about pulling people towards your brand. Marketing is about pushing products and services.



Branding

At the end of the day, we’re all brand builders. Regardless of your job title or description, if you interact with customers or participate in any part of promoting, developing, or delivering your organization’s products and services you are a part of creating the gestalt experience that creates your brand.

Branding is what your company believes in, why it exists, and how consumers feel about your business and products. Branding promotes loyalty and long-term commitment.


Marketing

The act of marketing includes all of the activities involved in taking our brand’s products and services to market.

Marketing encompasses strategies to build awareness of your company’s products and services and to promote and protect the brand. Every message about your company is part of your marketing, including all social media interactions

Advertising is a subset of marketing, focused mostly on acquiring customers and driving sales.



Branding Is the Way to Go

Marketing is necessary, nobody doubt that. However, marketing by itself can’t develop an audience that is receptive to your message. Branding is what makes your audience interested in your message and prevents you from having to reinvent the wheel every time you develop marketing content. Use your marketing to develop your branding but don’t ever forget the distinction between them.


Personal Brands are Important to Everyone

Personal brands are not only for the entrepreneur that owns their own business. It is the secret sauce that can make you stand out of a stack of resumes.

If you don’t develop your own personal brand others will do it for you. Developing your personal brand is the proactive way of controlling your career development and how you are perceived in the marketplace.

I would add to this Javier \ud83d\udc1d beBee that we all need strategy. When you have a brand and people see it, they want consistency, meaning they expect certain things from you. If your posts (and your brand) are scientific, people expect science (not self-promotion). Your strategy has to be a matter of giving. You give information in an insightful, interesting manner, and people follow. This is strategy and very different from marketing. Before you sell yourself or your product, make sure you've built a level of trust. This is key and extremely important. So many people fail on social media because they jump right to marketing. Build a friendship with your audience first. Attract people through your knowledge, your insights, your humour, etc. Once people follow you as a person (trust) then you can implement brand and marketing. Always have your strategy down first. And make sure it's long-term, not "shoot and split" (second biggest mistake on social media). Thanks for the post, Javier.

Javier, Branding isn't what you are, it's who you are, there's a significant difference. It's about your purpose as an organization and how you may contribute to the greater good. It's the sum of all of your customers experiences.

Steve Jobs understood what a personal brand is about. It is your unique essence and impact in the world. Steve reminded us to pursue our uniqueness. His personal brand defined all his actions. It was about the relentless pursuit of excellence. It was about innovating, not being afraid to break the rules to be different. What is your personal brand about? He didn’t care about making money. He cared about something bigger. Your personal brand is always about something bigger. So what’s that bigger purpose that drives you? So, here’s my challenge to all of us. How about we live as if our life really counted? How about we start to define our leadership legacy while we still have time to fulfill it? Buzz on ! Enjoy beBee ! Enjoy life !

At the middle of the Karen Gunton diagram is not authenticity, at the middle of that Karen Gunton diagram is a blackhole of massive groupthink. If I had been given an opportunity to present something to Steve Jobs I would not get past the receptionist. The receptionist will nicely tell me that "sorry luv' if that is what you are going to show Steve Jobs, he is going to crucify you". Let us take just one simple quote "marketing is what you do if your product is no good". Never mind creating exhortations about brand, just this part alone will deserve my ass to be kicked from here to kingdom come. One cannot bring another cookie cutter to a world that is going absolutely cookies and glutted with cookie thinking. Brand deserves to be discussed but not when it is conflated with personal branding. That is like Steve Jobs creating a brand for Apple but placing that on par with a personal brand of a sales person in one of his Apple stores. One is about changing the world, the other is marketing and selling of an individual.
