Building a Successful Personal Brand

Sell Yourself: Tips to Creating a Powerful Personal Brand

Personal brands are important to everyone. Personal brands are not only for the entrepreneur that owns their own business. It is the secret sauce that can make you stand out of a stack of resumes.

If you don’t develop your own personal brand others will do it for you. Developing your personal brand is the proactive way of controlling your career development and how you are perceived in the marketplace.

Tip 1: Determine your unique value proposition

Spend some time thinking about what makes you different than your peers -- your strengths, your passions, and your goals.

If you left your job today, what would your company and colleagues miss? Know who you are, as well as who you are not.

Tip 2: Find out how others see you

Ask trusted colleagues, co-workers, and friends for four or five adjectives they would use to describe you.

What are you good at? What are your strengths? In which areas do they view you as "irreplaceable?"

Tip 3: Identify your goals

Where would you like to be in six months? One year? Five years? Ten years?

It’s important to have a clear picture of your personal and professional goals, both short and long term.

Defining your goals is necessary to crafting a message that helps you reach them.

This will help you to not only identify the most important things to spend your time on, but will also have something to align new projects with. Use your values and priorities as a compass that guides you both in action and your decision-making process. This will ensure you stay on track.

Tip 4: Identify your target audience

Just like Starbucks knows that their target audience is coffee drinkers, you need to define to whom you want to send your message.

This will not only help you hone your message, it will help you deliver it to the right places.

Tip 5: Reorganize your priorities

You're probably used to putting yourself behind your company, co-workers, and clients.

You still want to be loyal to these groups, but be loyal to yourself, first.

Tip 6: Pay attention to the details

Everything you do ultimately contributes to your personal brand.

Once your brand has been defined, make sure that the little things -- the way you dress, your body language, how you behave with co-workers, the emails you write -- are consistent with your brand message.

Tip 7: Update your resume

#000000; font-family: arial; font-size: 12px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 13px; orphans: 2; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; background-color: #ffffff;">Go through your resume to determine it gels with your brand.

Ensure that your resume accurately defines who you are, and is in line with both your short-term and long-term goals.

Tip 8: Become a social networker. Share Your Knowledge

Set up accounts at social networking sites such as beBee, Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook. Ask those in your target audience to follow to you, and update on a daily basis.

Make sure your updates are germane to your branding message.

If you're looking to build your brand, then you should be speaking on a regular basis. Naturally, this will mean developing your communication skills. If you speak in exactly the same manner others do, you will never stand out from the crowd.

Speak from a place of knowledge and power. Show that you know what you're talking about, and answer questions in a way that serves your audience.

Show that you are confident. Some may criticize or disagree with you. The important thing is to remain open to feedback

It’s not enough to learn it; you have to teach it and share your knowledge by helping others. Do this through videos, social media, and writing. This is where you prove you know your stuff and gain exposure from doing so.

Tip 9: Build your own website

Your website should highlight your professional accomplishments, your skills and knowledge, what you stand for, and your overall value.

Make it primarily about you, not your company or clients.

Tip 10: Blog

Platforms like beBee make it easier than ever to promote yourself to your target audience.

Examples:

https://www.bebee.com/@msweetwood

https://www.bebee.com/@dean-owen

https://www.bebee.com/@paul-croubalian

https://www.bebee.com/@mamen-delgado

Commit to posting a couple of times a week on topics that your audience will find interesting and educational, but that also highlight your unique skills and experience.

Tip 11: Get published. Write thought leadership articles and participate in interviews.

Write a book, contribute to industry publications, or simply update the content on your blog.

Being published is an ideal way to promote yourself as an expert in your field.

Tip 12: Promote your brand in person too

Be sure to promote your brand in person, too.

Join and participate in industry groups, give talks at conferences, or offer to spearhead a large project that highlights your unique talents.

Tip 13: Tend to your marketing network

Be sure to keep co-workers, followers, colleagues, clients, and friends updated about what you are doing.

Word of mouth is a powerful marketing tool, and what the people in your network say about you will ultimately have an effect on your brand.

Tip 14: Remain a student of your industry.

No matter how well you know your industry or area of expertise, it would be wise to remember that things are changing at a faster rate than ever before, and you have to stay up-to-date with the latest changes and trends. Be open about your shortcomings and weaknesses. This will make you all the more human and relatable.

Tip 15. Be Yourself. Be authentic

Find your own style. You don’t have to do what everyone else is doing and just follow the crowd.Use your style and uniqueness to attract the jobs and clientele that you desire. For example you can build your brand by doing videos sharing wine reviews and tips. Find your own style and create a new set of footprints for others to follow in.

Tip 16. Craft Your Personal Brand Persona

This will help in creating your brand. When it comes to your brand who are you and why do people enjoy working with you? beBee gives you a platform to develop deeper professional relationships through passions.

Building a personal brand takes time and effort, but it’s worth it. The need for a personal brand will continue to increase. It’s the one thing that no one can take away from you and it can follow you throughout your career. It’s a leadership requirement that lets people know who you are and what you stand for.

Tip 17: Review your brand frequently

Are you portraying your brand in a way that's concise and easily understood?

Is your brand message consistent among all platforms? A regular review will ensure your message remains clear.

Excellent lesson, Javier \ud83d\udc1d beBee. I like Tip 8 about sharing knowledge since it not only demonstrates expertise, it makes you think about things in different ways, as students learn and then question what you are teaching. Makes the teacher think. And, the best thing that can happen: When the student learns and questions enough to become a teacher.

Personal brand has come so far in a relatively short period of time. In this Inc article Nicholas Cole shares tips how you too can learn from the personal brand of Donald Trump How Donald Trump's Personal Brand Won Him The Presidency http://www.inc.com/nicolas-cole/how-donald-trumps-personal-brand-won-him-the-presidency.html SNL did focus on some of Donald Trump's winning characteristics which maybe won't make us a better human beings, but it definitely has now proven that personal branding like this is what it takes to win the Presidency of the United States SNL Tape Review of Trump's most Emotive side of Personal Brand https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbrXTh0Ioj4 If we incorporate our personal brand with an attitude of a "winning culture" that we used to call "entitlement" - imagine how far personal branding has taken us - that in January one of the world's greatest personal brands will be running the United States, which means what? Think of the possibility of you becoming the leader of your very own country with your personal brand.

Sharing knowledge and working together can greatly enhance your brand and increase your exposure, credibility, and authenticity. Through an affinity for music, I recently teamed up with a guy who has a music show on Youtube. I will be promoting his show, through the content I produce on beBee, which I share on a host of other platforms. He, in turn, will be promoting me -- and beBee -- on his show.. I use beBee as my home base and always include the beBee logo and links to the music reviews/columns hive on everything I publish.
