How To Become a Travel Blogger

Travel blogging is a crowded field and it is getting more crowded by the day. After all, the idea of getting paid to travel the world seems like an amazing thing to try to do. You get to visit wonderful places around the world on someone else’s dime! It’s a dream job, right? Building a blog is like building any other business: success takes time, patience and dedication.

On beBee we can enjoy the best travel bloggers I know. Paul Walters

It's not surprising at all if, at some point in your life, you've dreamed of becoming a travel blogger.  After all, according to a Google survey, "how to become a travel blogger" is actually the seventh most searched travel phrase on the entire web. Just because you travel and write doesn’t mean you can write well or can become a good travel writer. In fact, I am not a good blogger :-)

Becoming a travel blogger seems like a great idea in theory, but as you get the ball rolling the process can get increasingly overwhelming. To be full time and make a living from your travel blog, it's not quite as simple as just throwing up a few posts and having a Twitter account or Facebook page. Being successful in blogging takes a lot of strategy, as well as talent for telling stories and presenting them in a way that inspires people to see the world. Passion is at the root of great writing, and making that shine through in your blog will keep readers interested. Sticking to what you love will keep your enthusiasm and motivation up, too.

When we start out, we use to focus mainly on posting high-quality content. If you are a great photographer, you have really good travel photos and you are really proud of your pictures. You probably think that word of mouth or support from family and friends is enough to create a momentum to push your blog to the limelight, but it isn’t. You shouldn't underestimate social media marketing and its importance in making your posts visible to your audience. What you should do is write posts and then spend the rest of your time promoting them in social media or getting them featured on other websites through collaborations.

I recommend being as narrow and focused in your topic(s) as possible. Whether it’s Turkey, Spain, Thailand, Morocco, or your small town, the power of search lets everyone define their niche and still be able to reach millions of potential readers. In fact, being niche now is better than trying to be a more general resource site. Moreover, focusing lets you become an expert.

The only way to get better is to keep doing it. I know I for one certainly didn’t win any marathons by waking up one morning and saying “today is it!” … but the fact of the matter is that you have to practice to perfect an art. beBee is also a marathon, a long way to go ! I enjoy a lot the way ! Success is about enjoying your way. Success is not about reaching your goal. After reaching your goal you feel empty. Success is about making mistakes.

Remember to be social on social media. That means actively responding to comments, and sharing other people’s content if you think your followers will enjoy it. Here are specific tips for each network:

Facebook

1 post per week, postcard type photos with short captions work well. So does uploading 10 different images as an album. Video and Facebook Live has been doing well. Facebook doesn’t like 3rd party sharing apps, so don’t use them.

Twitter

5 posts or updates per day, links shared along with a few photos will get better engagement. One hashtag only, or none. Schedule new blog posts to share 3-4 times each spread throughout the month. Occasionally tag relevant companies/tourism boards where appropriate, they may re-tweet it.

MyTweetPack Recommendation - Harnessing the power of Twitter

Instagram

I’ve found cutting back to posting every other day is increasing my engagement per photo. Tag the location so others nearby can find your shots. I recommend using 3 hashtags in the caption, with another 10 targeted hashtags in the first comment.

beBee

1 post per week, longer descriptions seem to work well on beBee — tell a story. So does uploading 10 different images as an album. Share your story through 3 hives. You can share it through Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+, so probably you can save time if you write on beBee and share it through Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, instead of duplicating your content ! LOL

Would You Like To Travel And Work At The Same Time? by Paul Walters

A lot of travel bloggers develop their skills by reading. They read any marketing, strategy, business, or self-development books. Running a blog is running a business, and if you don’t constantly learn, you’re going to fall behind. Every successful travel blogger I know is a voracious reader. They constantly try to improve their skills and knowledge. You must always be student. You must always learn. We need to learn daily.

Paul Walters. I haven't used Instagram in a while, I keep telling myself I need to get back on there. Once your away from Instagram or any Social Platform for any length of time it's like starting all over again because people move on. I also recommend MyTweetPack for promotion on Twitter, it works great and simplifies so much.

Javier \ud83d\udc1d beBee many thanks for the post and invaluable advice therein. I am deeply humbled by your praise but inspired at the same time. I am off on my travels in the next few weeks and will post from exotic locations such as Raja Ampat, West Papua and hopefully ( weather permitting) the Banda Islands

Javier: thanks for such an interesting blogging buzz. You provide important insights and awesome advice on what it takes to be a successful travel blogger in today's crowded social media space. I'm glad you highlighted the phenomenal travel blogging of Paul Walters, whom beBee is very fortunate to have producing such unique buzz and honey. Anyone who aspires to become a relevant travel blogger should read, study and learn from Paul's style and professionalism. I would also note that travel blogging is similar in many ways to being a multi-media journalist. You must not only possess excellent writing and reporting skills, but it's also essential need to excel in digital photography and video technology to tell the story beyond just words. This is where the Live Buzz feature can come in handy for practice, per my recent post https://www.bebee.com/producer/@dbgrinberg/how-to-catch-more-buzz-with-bebee-live-video. In essence, Paul is a master of this trade and deserves many accolades for his exemplary contributions to Producer. Thank so much, Paul, for all YOU do! And thank you, Javier, for shining a spotlight on Paul's terrific travel blogging.
