Microsoft buys LinkedIn: good or bad news for beBee ?

Many people are asking us if LinkedIn acquisition by Microsoft is positive or negative for bebee.

Microsoft buys LinkedIn: good or bad news for beBee ?

In our humble opinion, it is great news. Why is it excellent news for bebee?

1. It puts beBee in value as LinkedIn's main competitor. They have paid a premium of 40% over the market price. You can read more here left over the low activity of its users:

http://venturebeat.com/2015/ 10/29/linkedin-now-has-400m- users-but-only-25-of-them-use- it-monthly/

2. Currently, bebee is the only independent professional social network with a promising traction in the US, in addition to many other markets.

3. LinkedIn will spend at least the next year trying to integrate services with Microsoft (Skype, etc ...) a lengthy and time consuming process. As you already know, complex integrations of these dimensions come at a great cost to potential opportunities.

4. LinkedIn is a natural and obvious purchase for Microsoft, which is very strong in selling services to businesses and professionals, and will now focus on selling more subscription based services to companies and users. As a result there will be a noticeable decline in the quality of the Linkedin "user experience" (The current perception oh which is already very negative).

5. beBee is now the only professional social network whose main focus is to give the best possible service to consumers and businesses for free, listening daily, as beBee business is about monetizing through advertising and e-commerce. This business model has an ARPU which is much higher and is antagonistic to paid subscription services similar to those of LinkedIn/Microsoft.

Which is your opinion ?

Microsoft buys LinkedIn: good or bad news for beBee ?

http://venturebeat.com/2015/10/29/linkedin-now-has-400m-users-but-only-25-of-them-use-it-monthly/

LinkedIn is much more about strictly professional, jobs and selling. beBee is about engagement through passions. Personal interests generate deeper professional relationships. BeBee is about building business relationships rather than contacts.

Excellent article from Matt Sweetwood https://www.bebee.com/producer/@msweetwood/who-would-bee-the-winner-in-the-microsoft-buyout-of-linkedin

First of all I love your infographic Javier Cámara Rica! Great illustration of the difference. I think you make some excellent business points about what will be happening LinkedIn for quite some time, which is a great opportunity for beBee to capitalize on. Another added benefit is that you can learn from all of their successes and mistakes - features, management and technology backbone. This should enable you beBee to catch up and ultimately leap frog LinkedIn and other social sites. While we're talking about learnings, were you ever a user of Ecademy? Most people in the US aren't familiar with it but it was bigger in Europe. The community there was one of my favorites. I'm sure there are some good lessons from what worked and didn't work there. Unfortunately it was sold and transformed into something completely different.

With this acquisition, the question that can be raised is how's the transition going to take place and in the changed scenario will the Microsoft try to fix LinkedIn's ailing problems? Without any dramatic uplifting, if plans are made for reaping more profits, then that's totally wrong.

If we go back to mergers more often than not they failed because of cultural issues, fear of the unknown, trying mixing oil and water, feelings of one party as being the underdog and a myriad of other factors. Merger has its complexity and trying to manage it is counter-productive.

I concur with Cory Galbraith. Monetize via ads, or otherwise, to increase revenue, compete with other social sites, further build the platform, and boost beBee's potential market value -- with a big goal being an IPO at the appropriate time in the near future, hopefully. Thoughts?

A real be has positive attitude and that is why it produces honey. ten bees of the quality of Loribeth Pierson is the assurance beBee is on the right track. We only fail when we are not determined enough to succeed. This is not the case as Loribeth's comment tells us.

I concur with your excellent points, Javier Cámara Rica. I think this only makes beBee more valuable in terms of attracting disgruntled LinkedIn users who yearn for a more satisfying and engaging user experience. Moreover, I posit that Microsoft's competitors will give more serious consideration to acquiring social media platforms to compete. This may help beBee's potential market valuation going forward. Thanks for your astute analysis and important insights, Javier -- and thanks for all you do!

When Bill Gates was at his prime he was top dog and Steve Jobs was the bit part player with Apple. Then the internet happened and Gates realized he missed it and Microsoft have been playing catch up ever since. Today Microsoft is secondary to Amazon in the cloud, they are secondary to Apple in the technology top dog, they have Google trying to bite at their core and while they are still in the game, Blackberry thought their position was solid in the enterprise market, but even Facebook is heading this way, so if that is threatened Microsoft become very vulnerable. Steve Jobs did not miss the major digital transformation points and Amazon, Facebook (as much as I can't stand them) are ferocious players. By Microsoft buying LinkedIn they have positioned LinkedIn as a large-cap play but investors will decide that share price not Microsoft's gamble. A 2 billion valuation gets an organization into mid-cap territory so that as an independent is no small change, but a mega-cap interested in another LinkedIn type play would be someone like Alphabet - and whether it is Google or Facebook, the first number of significance is growing past their own trillion dollar market cap threshold, from there who can predict how crazy things can get. Where Microsoft now have to juggle is that what they have overpaid for, may eventually challenge privacy and monopoly issues because LinkedIn will be incorporated into their current enterprise products, and it is in the trust issues and platform changes due to technological evolution - they have assumed all this will relatively stay the same. They won't and anti-trust has hit them before. The others who have a trillion dollar market cap in their plans mean that Microsoft is no longer the only game in town. There will be buyers galore.

Agree, integration will take longer than anticipated and acquisition cost will climb forcing Microsoft to cut expenses i..e. employees.. In the meantime, employees who are front line will become frustrated as customers become worried about ,the long term impact of the purchase. This will have a direct negative impact on customer service. BeBee will only benefit from the confusion and acquire new customers as a result.

Thank you Javier Cámara Rica for sharing your insightful and concise explaination so educational. You are right, beBee is the only one on the market, with its sustainable and successful approach, now ! Li will support the needs of the aggressive growth targeted by MS, so far from its initial purpose, to turn and hit users into customers, as the MS's last laps against Open source era. Li = 106 million active users (December 2002 - March 2016) BeBee = 11 million active users (in less than 18 months) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/LinkedIn

Been through to megabank mergers, it is demoralising even if you survive the cuts as you see all your friends get chopped, one by one. Not to mention cultural differences, and the air of superiority the Microsoft guy will have when he is assigned to work in LinkedIn, and the appropriate disdain from the LinkedIn employees. I have see it first hand. It get's ugly.

This will stall their already slow growth. Staff are insecure - then reassured by management that LinkedIn will remain independent. Then the realisation that there are overlaps. Why do we need 2 datacenters in this country? let's close one and integrate. Hey you guys are using this ISV when we have a great deal with this other one, let's shut that one down and integrate. Then more overlaps start to appear, and realisation we don't need that dept. Restructure. Staff start to wonder which dept is going to be next. Meanwhile Lynda staff are frustrated LinkedIn are not delivering on their promises because they are busy exploring synergies. Lynda get fed up with the endless democracy. They just want to shift product. Customer service gets even worse. More dissatisfied LinkedIn users. A two year nightmare which will stall growth leaving an avenue for beBee to swarm LinkedIn's database.I would be extremely surprised if LinkedIn reached 500m by end 2017.
