5 Ways To...Manage Project Priorities
Here are 5 quick tips to help you better manage your team’s workload and hit those key milestones.
1. Collect a list of all your tasks.
Put together a list of all the tasks associated with a project. Don’t worry about the number of items or their order at this stage.
2. Categorize tasks as “urgent” vs. “important”.
Look at your list and identify items that require immediate attention. Focus on tasks that if not completed could result in serious consequences (missed client deadline, missed publication or release date, etc.). Urgent tasks should always be actioned before focusing on other tasks.
3. Assess value.
Now, look at your list of important tasks and identify what carries the highest value to your business. Which types of tasks have top priority over the others? For example, responding to a client request. Another way to assess value is to look at how many people are impacted by the task. The more people impacted, the higher the value.
4. Order tasks by estimated effort.
If you have several important tasks that have the same degree of value, focus on the tasks you think will take the most effort to complete.
5. Be flexible and adaptable.
Uncertainty and change is all but a given in any project. It’s important to keep in mind that priorities will change, but always stay focused on the tasks you know you need to complete.
Effectively managing project priorities will help maximize team engagement, enhance your credibility as a leader and ensure your project’s success.
