How Blogging Can Improve Your Self Esteem


I never thought I'd do much with my writing until I started a weekly blog for my new business Jennifer Grant International in 2015. Since that time, I have learned many things about blogging and more importantly, I have learned a lot about myself in the process. My biggest lesson to date is to not get discouraged with my blogging efforts and that persistence and practice make perfect. 

It's true that social media can be overwhelming but there are a lot of healthy ways to use social media to boost your self-confidence and self-esteem. Here are a few tips that I have found helpful. 

Using social media to your advantage  

When you feel like your blog writing is in a slump, you can turn to social media to boost your self-confidence by talking to a trusted colleague, mentor or friend.  Sometimes one 'like' from a real friend can make you feel better than 100 likes from total strangers. Don't get me wrong, new readers are essential to building your blogging audience but you need to be patient and consistent in getting there.

Don't Compare yourself to others

Perhaps the most important thing you can do for your self-esteem on social media is to stop comparing yourself to others. This is, of course, easier said than done but with time and effort, you will get better at it. When you stop focusing on how everyone else is doing, you have more time and energy to show your authenticity and true talent.    

Know your strengths and ask for help

Just knowing what your strengths are will help you to make better decisions and write better blog posts. Embrace your uniqueness, and remember everyone has their own story to tell. Don't forget to ask for advice from any of your hero bloggers, most people are happy to share how they became successful bloggers.  

Give every blog your best effort 

Expect the best from yourself but know that your best is not necessarily what others see as the best. No one is perfect so don’t dwell on every little mistake you make. If you focus on the positive aspects of blogging on social media, you can activate a powerful tool for your self-esteem.

Writing regularly helps you to find your personal voice

Writing and posting your thoughts online is a great way to become more comfortable with your voice. You can write about what ‘you’ believe in and how ‘you’ would change the world. Writing blog posts allows you to contemplate and articulate your thoughts and opinions on virtually any subject. 

You can keep track of your personal achievements

Blogging allows you to keep consistent documentation of all of the amazing, interesting and exciting things you’ve achieved. When you’re feeling bad about yourself all you have to do is scroll through your blog’s archives and be reminded of how wonderful you really are.

You can witness your personal growth

Scrolling through your old blog posts is also a great way to see how much you’ve grown as a person and a blogger.  Your opinions, interests, and appearances change over time and blogging allow you to witness how far you’ve come. If you feel discouraged about your current state, just remember where you started.

Readership creates a feeling of acceptance and care

Everyone’s readership and engagement starts at zero, but the longer you stick to your blogging routine, the more people will trickle in. It’s a nice little boost to your self-esteem when you see that ten, twenty or a hundred people checked out your latest post.  It may take time, but people will eventually care and notice what you’re up to.

The most important person to blog for is you

You can beat any feelings of negativity by looking back and remembering how much effort and hard work you’ve put into building your business or career. So, no matter what happens in your life, rest assured that you’re at least doing something good by blogging even if it is just for you.

Great post Jennifer!...My favorite piece of advice is focusing on your own self-awareness and personal growth...Allow yourself the space to be 'human' and don't fret so much over what others think...Only YOU know how to be you;-)

All worthy points, Jennifer, but I believe that the most important thing in blogging success, at least here on beBee, is to regularly read the bloggs of others and comment on them. A happy blogging community is a two way street.
