beBee Is Growing While LinkedIn Is Shrinking. Coincidence? I Think Not.
I have, in the past, written a lot about the struggles that a rather large number of writers faced over in the Lumpy Kingdom (LinkedIn) in 2015.The main issues for most of us had to do with the notifications to our followers that were promised but which LinkedIn didn’t deliver on.
This, of course, was based primarily on having reliable access to a following of regular readers which is the main incentive for blogging in the first place.
But there is another side to this frustration and that is with the people who actually use LinkedIn as a business sourcing and building tool.
Although I have made my blogging headquarters here on beBee, I still maintain a presence and have a steadily growing group of followers on LinkedIn. But I am no longer what you would call an active member.
This Kind Of Says It All
A couple days ago, I received an email from Samantha Bailey who is a brilliant LI analyst over in jolly old England. Sam has predicted with scary accuracy most the stuff that has been happening to LinkedIn and its members over the past few years since the downhill slide started culminating with the acquisition of LI by Microsoft.
Slowly and steadily the enchantment with LI, especially among the business prospectors and paid members is now, I would say, every bit the equal as the outrage that all the non-influencer writers felt all throughout 2015.
But the writers knew, that even if the Pulse publishing platform disappeared completely, which it more or less has, that they could always maintain contact with their followers, by going back to their web sites or WordPress sites and linking their posts to their home page like they used to do before Pulse came along.
But for the business prospectors, it was a whole different kettle of fish.
The link Sam Bailey sent me is a very articulate and well-reasoned attack on the new LinkedIn platform and all the design defects that are now present in it.

I urge you to read this and repost it. And if you are someone who is holding on to LinkedIn because of the substantial investment in time and energy you have made in it, realize that this all may be in the process of being negated by those old LinkedIn chestnuts of ineptitude, apathy, and neglect.
Nobody can really understand why Linkedin keeps on making things more difficult for its users to achieve success through their networks.
I’m not sure LinkedIn really understands why itself. Hence Mr. Bliwas’ letter to LI's CEO, Jeff Weiner.
BeBee Is Quickly Becoming The Logical AlternativebeBee.com is the site I went to after my frustration with LinkedIn was showing some of the early signs of turning into a mild depression.
In fact, a rather large number of writers went there at the same time and that number continues to grow.
Because beBee is set up to allow for joining or creating any number of vertical groups or hives, as they are known in the beBee vernacular, people in virtually any area of business will be able to join and connect with both like-minded individuals and individuals in their target groups.
Like any new experience, beBee comes with its own learning curve. But you can trust me when I tell you that this curve is very short, and the site is designed to make it easy for people to find what they are looking for.
Joining beBee Does Not Necessarily Involve Quitting LinkedIn
Nor should it. In this day and age, you need to have a presence on as many sites as you can that will give you access to the people you want to reach.
Personally, as a blogger, I find that posting on beBee and then using their link tools is actually a very easy and effective way to stay in touch with my followers on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and Google+.

Anyone who is in the business of analyzing the craziness that has taken hold at LinkedIn will likely tell you that the future there is anything but bright.
And that hedging your bets is the smart play these days.
beBee is a young and steadily growing site that offers a great deal of attraction for those who are now completely frustrated with LinkedIn.
Is beBee the answer to your dreams? The short answer to that is simply that it’s all in what you make of it.
What it is, however, it is a site that can grow into the same sort of networking and business development powerhouse that LinkedIn is in the process of un-becoming.
A number of us are working to make that an important part of beBee’s offering and the more like-minded people we attract the sooner that potential will be realized.
LinkedIn is very obviously moving in a direction that a lot (and by a lot I mean millions) of people are not happy about.
You can stay and fight, like the bloggers did in 2015. Or you can start investigating viable alternatives, of which beBee is most certainly one.

As you know well, Jim, when push comes to shove, independent writers, whom you like to call "Bloggers", only want one thing from self-publishing platform -- reach and distribution. Okay, that may be two things, but closely related. Writers want to build readership, and in my experience, seek engagement as a stepping stone to increased readership. That is not to say that engagement per se is eschewed by writers or bloggers, only that as writers and bloggers it is not an objective in itself. Plus, it is a common phenomenon to see engagement levels (%) drop as readership number increase dramatically. Engagement is sought by each of us interested in intellectual exchange -- which interest is not solely the province of writers and bloggers. For the public record -- and may it be placed on the walls of that division of Hell where some SM platform developers will hopefully end up -- the main thing that most writers and bloggers need is distribution of 100% of their posts to 100% of their followers 100% of the time. Given that, it becomes the writer's or blogger's responsibility to build his or her readership, engagement or not. And it is a guarantee by Javier 🐝 beBee of what I call the triple-100 detailed above that sets beBee apart from all other SM platforms.

I believe you're talkung about the LI Influencers, Mike Rana. Yeah, they are famous for not caring. I never really talk about them whne I discuss LinkedIn bloggers, I'm talking about the people with substantial networks who followers never get bnotified of a new post. These are the people who are suffering.

You are certainly spot on Roland Waddilove that LI is bigger overall but on a personal level I am finding that this is less relevant than I might have supposed. Posting the same articles on LI and BeBee gets me seriously different readership numbers. Articles posted on LinkedIn get a handful of readers these days despite a large enough personal network, history on the site and a known profile in my little corner of the Outdoor business world. The same posts on beBee.com get much larger readership numbers and some helpful and interesting feedback. My network here is tiny by comparison with LinkedIn but everyone gets a chance to see my stuff. Over on the other site most of my connections don't see a notification when I publish so that makes building up a network a bit of a pointless task. Somehow, for me at least, beBee manages to be bigger in effect.

I think beBee is working towards very much being its own dog in the social media world. It's not a LinkedIn wanna be nor has it ever been, in my opinion.

Nicely stated Phil Friedman and others -- too many bees to name). Likewise, one of my first blog posts on beBee addressed some of these issues, which have only gotten worse over time (as you, Jim and others have astutely articulated). "User Engagement & Satisfaction: beBee Beats LinkedIn in Landslide" (April 2016) https://www.bebee.com/producer/@dbgrinberg/user-engagement-satisfaction-bebee-beats-linkedin-in-landslide With that said, I would reiterate what Javier 🐝 beBee and others have said about not placing all of one's blogging eggs into one basket, per se (even if it's a basket case run by an alleged "basket of deplorables" like LI, IMHO).

David, I am not sure it is a mystery anymore. LinkedIn wanted a database they could monetize by selling access to it for data miners, recruiters, marketers — anyone who would be willing to pay for such access. The open social and professional networking and the open publishing platform were only come-ons to bolster and speed efforts to build the user database. And as soon as they could see an exit materializing from plan to reality, LI dropped all pretense of interest in being a social and professional net, reneged on all their prior promises and representations to users, grabbed the money and go out of town. Except for Jeff Weiner and Dan Roth who were clearly smitten with the idea of hanging out with celebrities such as Oprah, so have stuck around while the internment of the company is completed. Cheers!
