Canadians…What A Lucky Bunch of SOBs We Are

Canadians…What A Lucky Bunch of SOBs We Are

c1a839fb.jpgWell it's Friday and you know what that means here on the Quiet Side of The Lake.

This is a class-two rant, in which I try and be a little more positive than usual. It’s part of my therapy. Hope you enjoy it and realize that while you may hear the odd harsh thing. it’s all just me trying to tell the truth as I see it.

I live in a country called Canada. To me, it's the best country going.

We have our ups and downs, in fact we’re going through a bit of a political scandal right now, but the people here are basically pretty damn good folks.

We don't brag about being a great country, although I guess you could call this bragging a bit.

We just carry on being Canadians.

We drink a lot of beer and we own a lot of guns but we don't kill all that many people with either of those things.

Our economy is pretty solid despite the fact that our dollar is only worth about 75% of a Yankee greenback.

A lot of us are overweight, but what do you expect with a Tim Horton's on every corner?

We understand that we are a nation of people from all over the place. But more importantly, most of us respect that. But you are always gonna have a few assholes (relatively speaking) who don’t. These people are sad because they are only imprinting prejudices from the US (and other much less tolerant places), which is a country that influences us in a lot of different ways. Some good. Some, not so much.

But our country is still a true democracy, because while there might be ideological differences between the left and the right, we’re still sort of civilized about how we deal with each other.

We only have one NBA basketball team and one major league baseball team, but the whole damn country gets behind them.

There’s a lot of hockey played and watched Canada. It borders on obsession. So I you don’t like hockey you might not like it here a whole lot.

There are a lot of talented people who grew up here, went to the States and became famous. But they never forget where they were from. That’s because where they’re from is a pretty damn fine place.

I grew up in a border town at a time when America was considered to be genuinely great. That’s not so much the case these days. Things are not so great down there right now. But we know that they will work through it. They always do.

And we’ll always be friends. Because basically, except for the dipshits, Americans are OK with Canadians.

Canada has two languages. Not many English speaking people can speak French. But nobody seems to give a shit anymore.

That’s the thing about Canada. We don’t make a big deal out of stuff that’s not really important to a lot of people.

f7b43f62.jpgThat’s not to say we’re not paying attention.  We just don’t want anybody else’s crap interfering with things here. Because life is Canada is good.

We have no reason to want to be like or part of any other country. That would just fuck things up.

So today, I’m gonna go for a ride because it’s sunny winter’s day and it's not what you would call bone chillingly cold. Then we’re gonna drive to a city called Burlington which has, among other things, an Ikea. Because Canadians love Ikea. And my wife and I are no exception.

Then we’re gonna take the slow way back though a bunch of little towns and maybe stop for coffee somewhere.

But what we’re not gonna do is worry about very much at all. Because this is Canada. And while we have our share of things we need to be concerned about, we don’t let them rattle us to the core of our being.

Because there’s no issue so large that it can’t be worked out in a Tim Horton’s summit meeting.

America is pretty screwed up right now. We see it every day in the news and on social media. And we have some advice. Instead of getting all wrapped up in your partisan political bullshit, maybe you should learn more about how democracies like Canada, and Denmark and Norway and Sweden work.

You might see that this so called “socialism” that your current president is railing so hard against is really nothing more that government using your tax dollars to benefit you and your families.

This was how the system is supposed to work but never really has because of all the greedy rich people in America.

Ooops, sorry for getting political. That’s kinda unCanadian.

Anyway, on behalf of all the lucky SOBs in the Great White North, have nice day, eh.

I must admit, Jim, I do love Canadians, and you seem to have a beautiful country, well worth visiting, but I’d have to visit in summertime as, these days, I can’t really stand the cold. Can you advise me on which day your summer will be this year?

Jim, Blessings on the democracy to the north and the sled they rode in on.
