On Writing Less & Making It Worth More
There was a time when the people I was connected to across a number of social media platforms kind of got used to seeing something longer format posts from me every day.And I have to admit that for a while there it became a self-imposed obligation. But over the past several months, other bright shiny objects have been attracting my attention, including:
A) The challenge of building my new business Bullet Proof Consulting, with the lovely and talented Charlene Norman, virtually from scratch. This includes the regular creation of ‘cornerstone’ content pieces for our web site and a whole lot of different marketing materials, which Charlene has no difficulty in coming up with.
B) My new mini-rant purveyor, Antoine the Rabbit, which gives me more time for A)
C) An uptick in my Onwords & Upwords business and business prospecting, because life goes on.
The Good Old Paradigm Shift
So what this has done, net net, is brought about a shift in priorities.
But the upside is that what I found after a month or so of doing this was that I was no longer thinking like a total information junkie, or an real op/ed maniac, reading every news story or business article and looking for an angle that I could spin into a post.
In short, I have slowly begun the arduous process of actually picking my battles that much more carefully, with the end in mind of elevating my blogging game to the point where some crazy organization or other will actually pay me to do this shit.
Needless to say, I have the experience base required to, at the very least, give it a good shot. And I certainly have defined enough methodology for moving forward effectively in many of the motivational posts I have done.
The Good Old Reality Check
So where does that leave me? It leaves me re-defining my overall purpose and potential utility, which is something I think everyone should do periodically, just to make sure they are not speeding recklessly down some intellectual cul-de-sac.
Right now, I have a healthy following on both beBee and Linkedin. But in some of the research I have done recently on frequency versus effective reach, I have found that there is a balance that needs to be struck there in order to optimize your readership and keep them happy without a) Overwhelming them with too much frequency and b) Removing yourself from the top drawers in their brains with not enough frequency. Now everybody and their uncle will have some opinions on how much or how little to write. But like most issues in the area of communications, all answers invariably begin with the phrase…”It all depends on your business…” and I would add, your objectives, and your ability to actually cobble together a convincing and relevant post.
Anyway, just wanted to let you know that if you are reading less from me, I do hope you understand that it’s not because I am drying up…no danger there…but because I am experimenting with the idea of Less Is More, as it pertains to what I write and more importantly, what you might like to read.
Because at the end of the day, “if there ain’t no audience, there just ain’t no show”.
