The Last Hurrah For The Big Oak Plank

The Last Hurrah For The Big Oak Plank

20150c3e.jpg

This shelf, that I put up yesterday in the basement, is made from a piece of wood that was part of a long bench that has been with us since Heather and I were first married.
The original bench was about 8 feet long and was comprised of two thick planks of beautifully beat up oak (I think). The bench was the thing our TV and stereo sat on for years and through one house of our own.
We first acquired it when we were living in a coach house is Rosedale that was owned by Gordon Lightfoot, with whom my wife was closely connected though the music business.
When we moved into our second house on Hannaford Street, we didn't need it, so we took it apart and used one of the planks for the base of an opening that looked down into the family room from the kitchen.
At Bowmore Road, our fourth house, we used it much like it's being used now,  to hold the amazing Hobbit house and whatever else Heather wanted to put on it.
Almost everything we owned when we first got married is gone, except for the pictures, some art, this plank and each other. So you could say there was a certain amount of sentimental value attached to it.
I had to cut a bit off one end to make it fit the space, but I think the plank will be very happy there, even though he's a bit shorter. But then we all shrink a little as we grow older.
PS; The framed photo is by my BIL Al Gunn and was a housewarming gift from him and my other sister, Diana Di Giorgio Gunn
.

Hope everybody is having a great weekend.

Yeah, sure. I reckon by bike it will take about 75 days to get there.

Jim Murray I have a few woodworking chores to do around the house and really can't be bothered. Any chance you could pop round with your tools...Oh and bring that off cut from the shelf, I do so like a bit of history!

The imprint is the story that goes with the object. That piece of wood holds a ton of memories. Not bad for beat up inanimate object. Thx Ian Weinberg

The quantum physicist David Bohm developed a mathematical theory in which he showed that we all leave imprints of ourselves on objects that we engage with. He went on to say " There are no nouns. Only very slow verbs!"

Love the music of Gordon Lightfoot and good to see he is still actively performing and will be in Mississauga on November 10th at the Living Arts Centre. Shelf looks good, love the feel of oak. When our contractor Stanley built a shelf in our basement, he rushed up and told us to come and look at it and then said "don't ever remove that" and we asked why and he said "because it is blessed, it has Jesus on it". We knew he was not drinking but lo and behold when we took a look at the wood grain pattern, the pattern of grain did resemble the face of Jesus and it looked a bit like the Shroud of Turin. Stanley's observation changed the meaning of that bench and such little things become special. That is the beauty of things that others would not care for, because when objects contain stories, they contain a part of our life and the photograph of your oak bench in your basement above is how I view that - something special that is a part of the story of both of your lives. Thanks for sharing this.

That, Jim, is the "beauty" of natural pieces, they are adaptable, durable, and get better with age. Pleased to see you and Heather are enjoying the new house. I've just received news that mine is still standing. Cheers all around.
