THE NEED FOR A QUIET MIND-OUR ADDICTION TO WHITE NOISE
There are many universal truths, but the one I have been thinking about more often is based on the importance of moderation, which I believe to be one of the keys to a happy life. It goes without saying that too much excess of anything isn't good for you. If you exercised for 4 hours a day, seven days a week, your body wouldn't have time to recover, and for most of us, we'd do more damage than good. Balance and moderation are two very difficult life's lessons to embrace, our individual addictions can and often get the best of us.
The notion of having to be as connected as we are in today's world is one that I've started to think about more often these days. The world of social media has turned many of us from being confident about who we are to feeling that our self-esteem needs to be boosted. In a recent video about Millennials, Simon Sinek made reference to how important it is for us to share with the world what we are doing and who we are, always looking for someone to approve of what we do by hitting the like button.
Recently, I'm starting to find that I don't enjoy spending as much time in front of my computer as I do, nor am I interested in looking at my cell phone a few hundred times a day. I'm starting to get a numb feeling in my brain as I continue to be engaged in social media, however, my addiction is more specific to media that is of a business nature and not a personal nature.
If we believe that moderation is one of the keys to a happy life, we need to think about how much time we spend being connected and more importantly, understand the value of those connections. There is so just too much white noise on the internet. Although I don't meditate, I can see that turning away or turning off your technology for an hour or two a day could be very healthy for you mentally and perhaps even physically. Getting up out of your chair and just going for a walk to contemplate life or take in some fresh air will help clear our mind and perhaps get some perspective on life.
How do you feel about the time you spend being tied to technology?
