Why I Love Working with Millennials ... and you should too!

In less than 10 years millennials will make up 75% of the workforce.  And for many of us, we will see a huge shift in our customer base as well.

As a Baby Boomer entering the workplace, many articles were written and hands rung about the type of employees we would be.  And then there was Gen X – the “What’s in it for Me” generation and great concerns about how we will ever be able motivate them.  But it worked out as it does with every new generation moving into the work force. 

Every new generation is formed by the events that define them.  It makes each generation unique from the last.  Millennials have seen the disloyalty of companies as their parents were laid off.  They watched as corporations were dissolved because of illegal business practices such as Enron, Arthur Andersen, E. F. Hutton and MCI/WorldCom.  They witnessed the hard hitting reality that life can be short when they watched the horrible events of 9/11 unfold.  They sat before television sets in classrooms watching the first teacher blast into space only to stare in horror as the space shuttle exploded before their very eyes.  But as Boomer parents we did a great job raising this generation to believe they can have, be and do anything they want!  (Okay so maybe we did go a little overboard but we had great intentions.)

I am blessed with a great staff ranging in age from 19 to 66.  They all add value and each brings a unique perspective.  But working with millennials has changed me, changed my views and made me a better leader.  Here is what I have learned from working with Millennials.
