For Whom Am I Writing?

For Whom Am I Writing?

For Whom Am I Writing?

NOTE: This post was previously published on WordPress. Here I made a few modifications.

After the initial euphoria related to my first blog post on the beBee publishing platform, I decided to create my personal blog on WordPress (about two weeks ago). I named it What Interests Me. I've been spending a couple of days dealing with the technical issues and general visual impression of my blog. By the way, the configuration process is not finished yet.

Given the fact that I wrote only one post The writer in me just woke up! I put it on the blog expecting equally good reviews as those I've got on beBee.

But writing on a personal blog is something completely different.  Obviously, it takes time for the ‘new kid on the block’ to be accepted. Not only was there no feedback, but there were no views at all. As if I published in the twilight zone. I was very discouraged that my post wasn't getting any traffic. It is hard to accept that no one was reading the article you consider to be solid.

And then, a kind of enlightenment happened! I asked myself, ‘Why does it matter?’

I started a blog as an experiment and I have had no idea how things continue to go further. I rediscover the joy of writing short stories that best suit my personality. Some of these stories are waiting to see the light of day.

Moreover, one of the reasons for starting a blog was to sharpen my written English, even though I had doubts whether to write in my own native language. I often experienced frustration when writing in English because the sentiment so perfectly expressed in Croatian is being lost in translation.

Finally, the decision on writing in English prevailed. Remains only to force me to think and write a draft primary in English to avoid the pitfalls of translation.

Given to all, I promised myself that a lack of feedback or low stats won't erode my self-esteem. Realistically speaking, thousands of different blog posts have been published daily. Being found and read among all that and with one or two followers is a miracle by itself.

Completely unburdened, I published another post on my blog.

Hope that views will follow, but even if doesn't, I am satisfied that my writing is a reflection of me and my way of thinking, and makes me happy when I read it. For now, I am the most important audience for my posts.

So, for whom am I writing?

For the time being, I write about what’s in my mind and heart and find a great joy in it. Some might say I write for myself. But what’s the difference between writing for yourself and for someone else?  No matter how personal my story is, others can find themselves in it.

Writing for myself I write for those who feel the same. I hope I’ll find those people and they would become my audience.

*******************************************************

NOTE: The Internet is full of articles on “writings for yourself vs. writings for others”. As in most other things in my life, I only rely on my common sense and logic. And I really think that you can't write for other people if you don't feel connected to a subject you are going to write about.

That’s why I’ll write for myself and people like me.

******************************************************

These are thoughts of a beginner blogger. Dear fellow beBee readers, what do you think?

Thank you so much, Franci\ud83d\udc1dEugenia Hoffman, beBee Brand Ambassador, for reminding me on my blog that I had neglected. I've already received some comments of your WordPress friends who welcomed me (back) to blogging. :-) As I said in my response to your comment on my blog, that’s what friends are for, to give impetus when needed. And I really needed one. As for my writing, you gave me a huge compliment, and I feel like writing again. :-)

You make me smile, Chas. Perhaps the world doesn't need another writer beginner, but why not try to find a nook in the vastness of the blogosphere. :-)

I think a lot of people on beBee for whom English is not their mother tongue have similar problems. But, as you said, we grow through challenges. Thanks for reading and commenting Julio Angel Lopez Lopez.

Perfect and advisable. I am stuck in a buzz about urbanism in Roman times and I have already started it three times. It's the bad thing about betting on another beBee. But we also grow with the challenges. regards

Milos, I just don’t know what to say. What a wonderful and profound message! Thank you so much! Not in my wildest dream I had no idea that my little story could touch so many people and provoke such interest. Thanks for sharing my post here on beBee and on LinkedIn.

Dear Lisa, I never thought that writing has such healing and cathartic power. As I said to Julie Hickmanickman, I feel like a part of me has been unleashed and begins to breathe freely. It may sound pathetic (even to me), but it's true. Thank you for your condolences and understanding.

Lisa Gallagher...You are a true expression of one who "follows her heart"...Whatever the personal opinions of others, (and they are not wrong in and of themselves), remember this...The heart is the true window to the soul...The intellect is the pursuit of external power, whereas within our hearts resides the awareness of our feelings, bringing us in touch with the higher order of logic and understanding of the soul...To view emotion as unnecessary or "devoid of clarity" only serves to repress the soul of an individual or species...I admire your resolve;-)

Let me place four points as a compass - OBSERVING - THINKING - WRITING - APPLYING then the compass of Lada Prkic is not who follows because in this life we do not know who it is we really touch. A simple exchange that happened in one day could be a life changer and yet having 10,000 followers can become a life accumulation and collecting people has an economic value for those that slice and dice in follower value. In observing I love people who are different from me because we can learn from people who are different from us. In thinking I love thinkers, people who are thinking because they want to learn. In writing it is about flow - how much the writer is in flow, not how many followers a writer has. I love flow not followers. In applying, this learning goes back to one's home for me and home is not a global village, it is the people you love, the center where one hopefully is fully present. If work is what we applying then that changes our compass, so find that True North. Best part of all this is my learning.

Kudos Lada Prkic, CEng! You have found those people and they already become your loyal audience. Fortunately, with such an approach you will not satisfy everyone, especially those who will never fully comprehend and understand this approach. I don't ever write by dictate or with a particular large audience in mind. If I manage to stay true to myself in writing, I will become a bit clearer and much closer to some people, while simultaneously I will dissociate from some people. And then, there is serenity. This is nothing more than a practice of approach called “Writing is a Joy”, since I am sure that "so much in there" remains after written words in the form and manner of how you are writing. Only carefully written words should cause a growing clamor (determined chaos), innovation and an inevitable progress. One word can make a miracle or a misery, similarly as a love.

Phil Friedman, I take no offense. I understand you did not engage me in this conversation but as I read comments it brought to mind an old conversation we had that we never did quite agree on. I do not find personal revelations as self-absorbed and I guess that is where our brains will continue to find differences. We are all moved by different writings, narratives, informative information and so on. That's what makes each of us unique- we all view the world differently in some manner if even through writing and what other other's write. There is intellect in narratives as well. I know you will disagree with my last statement but I find this to be very true. If someone is writing 'woe is me' posts constantly, they may be seeking attention. An occasional narrative that's personal is not attention seeking. Unless you walk in another's shoes who is writing said material that you find self absorbed it's just your opinion, right? Those are my thoughts and thanks for your comment Phil. :)

@Lisa Gallagher - Please understand that I did not engage you on this topic, but only responded to a comment in which you tagged me personally -- because you wanted to express your disagreement with what I had said about Lada Prkic, CEng's post. Consequently, I trust that you will now not take offense if I speak my mind candidly. The issue I take with revelations of personnel travails is that they strike me as uniformly self-absorbed, i.e., this is what happened to ME, this is how I felt, this is how I overcame. I have no doubt that such public expressions encourage contact from others who also are motivated to say what happened to THEM, how THEY felt, and how THEY coped or failed to do so. And it all strikes me as talking AT each other, rather than genuinely connecting -- but that is my personal opinion and judgement, which I seek in no way to impose on others. However, if someone makes the claim in a public forum that such activity is the life blood of person-to-person connection, I am moved to express my disagreement To my mind, emotional expressions of the kind in point are like mirrors -- people use them to look at themselves. In contrast, I see intellectual exchange as the effort to seek genuine connection, and intellect as the true window of the soul. By the way, and for the record, I do not place the capture and expression of emotion in fiction in the same category. Cheers! #17

Lada Prkic, CEng, It's never easy to lose a parent. When I was young and lost my father it was taboo to speak of his death after he was gone. I don't believe we spoke openly about it again until I was 19 years old. Death is part of life, sadly and I think many times we can benefit from each other by sharing such personal stories. I'm sorry for the loss of your father. When I write I find it to be a bit healing and it's my hope that others can find a touch of healing as well when we do share such stories.

Lisa Gallagher

Phil Friedman I completely understand where you are coming from and I also understand that for you personally, intellect is the true window to the soul. I have a different view as you know and that does not mean that I am correct and vice versa. I've read many articles over the years that are personal in nature and are very clear to me. When a person bares their soul with a personal narrative it can allow their readers to seek deep within or find a sense of peace. I find nothing wrong with self expression, it helps me to open up my senses a bit if that makes 'sense?" Like you stated, "This is not an argument," likewise, just sharing my own take on the subject. I guess writing is very subjective and I honestly enjoy many writing styles along with topics! Thanks, Phil!

Phil Friedman

prije 7 godina #13

I understand what you are saying, @Lisa Gallagher, and agree that some people write to bare their souls. However, speaking for myself only, as well, my own feeling is that Intellect is the true window to the soul, not emotion which, however genuine, is devoid of clarity. Moreover, rather than finding a "meeting of minds" (or souls) in emotion, I find people simply talking AT each other about THEMSELVES, in an exchange of SELF expression. And not really struggling through to mutual connection., however much each may feel reassured to find another in the world who is equally self absorbed about the same or similar matters. This is not an argument or a judgment. Only my own candid self expression, advanced because you tagged me in your comment. Cheers! #14

Lisa, I've read your stories that have been written after your mother passed away, and I felt so connected to these stories because I remembered all the pain I experienced after my father passed away of cancer. This is exactly what I was thinking when I wrote the sentence you pointed out. That's why I believe that writing for myself I also write for others who can find themselves in my stories.

I can see the points you are making Phil Friedman and they are valid. But this is where I digress... I will just speak for myself. There are many different writing styles and I'm aware people realize this. However, I may begin to write something that is stuck in my head. I need to get it out. As you know a lot of what I write pertains to anxiety in order to bring awareness, and I take no issue with differing views. But, there have been possibly 3-4 articles I've written since mom passed that came from my heart and were cathartic. So, I think possibly I began writing for me but with the idea that if I can bare my soul and show my vulnerability- it may help others as well , even if they do not comment. Not everyone can read articles like that because they are too close to the heart. When I write it's always my hope that something I've written may be of help in one way or another. Ok, with the exception of my Trump rant. I do rant on occasion ;-) I receive a lot of private messages after writing very personal stories. People share many personal stories with me yet they are afraid to bare their soul for others to see. I think many times I get messages from managers and CEO's for example and they do not want their employees to read their personal stories.

Lisa Gallagher

prije 7 godina #10

Lada Prkic, CEng, I admire anyone that writes in English when it's not your native language. I wish I knew how to write in a second language but I do not. Just a few phrases. This line summed up things quite well for me, "No matter how personal my story is, others can find themselves in it." I write for the same reasons. I have found many who can relate to certain stories I share. I have been told in the past that certain personal stories I wrote were fair game for constructive criticism. I don't mind the 'constructive' part if it's done with good intent. But, I've written a few since my mother passed which were extremely personal and I didn't write my stories to stroke my ego, I wasn't looking for attention, I wrote for me with the thought that others may be able to relate or share their stories too. So, I guess what I'm trying to say is this: Some stories can be cathartic for the writer and the reader.

@Cyndi Wilkins - I have had this very discussion with many writers whom I respect immensely, writers like Milos Djukic, and too many others to mention. Often, others don't see the importance of correct expression in this matter, but I do. For I believe that to say that one writes for oneself, is to be somewhat unclear about one's motivations in writing -- and to confuse writing to one's own personal standards with somehow not caring about being read by an audience. Indeed, some writers have literally said they don't care about being read -- which to my mind is self-contradictory, as long as you consider yourself a writer. Cheers!

Well, Lada Prkic, CEng, that brings a measure clarity to the issue. Which is my goal as well. See my recent piece: https://www.bebee.com/producer/@phil-friedman/conversation-isn-t-just-politely-waiting-your-turn-to-speak

I have to admit here Phil Friedman, that I have argued this position before with others in favor of what Lada is conveying...But now I realize the truth in your statement as I suppose if one were writing specifically for ones self, the lack of viewership would not be so bothersome as to actually write a post about it;-)

Phil, it is obvious that everything published is intended to be read by others, but I was thinking on the written content and joy of writing, regardless of views, likes or comments. I think that we just define differently the definition of 'writing for oneself'. I would also like my posts to be read. I just wait for the right audience.

Phil Friedman

prije 7 godina #5

I've said it before, as people like Jim Jim Murray, and others well know, but it bears repeating: It is a mistake to think that writers write for themselves. Writers write to be read by others, else they would simply journal and never publish. There is no clearer or incontrovertible truth than this. Of course, one can choose to write only to please the largest common denominator in audience taste, or one can choose to write what one truly and authentically believes in. But to do the latter is NOT the same as writing for oneself.

Thanks Julie Hickman, I also enjoy reading it.😊 Since I rediscover my passion for writing I started to think out loud - but on paper or screen. I began to write down thoughts that arise to me, and even find myself 'holding' them in my mind until I put it on the screen. I find this process very helpful for my writing. Who knows, maybe I discover my mission in life as Martin Luther King proclaimed in your quote.

"I am the most important audience for my posts." This statement sums it up beautifully Miss Lada...Might I add to it this wonderful quote..."To practice any art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow...So just do it." -Kurt Vonnegut
