Danny Boy - Happy St. Patrick's

Danny Boy is one of my favourite songs and synonymous for me with things Irish.

The lyrics were written by an English lawyer, Frederick Weatherly, in 1910 and adapted from the original tune to the tune "Londonderry Air” in 1913.

It was to become became a favourite among Irish recording artists (and others as well) and gained particular favour among Irish-Americans and Irish-Canadians.

As a young boy, I can remember my uncle, Les Dwyer, would love to hear Danny Boy sung, and as he listened, a tear or two would come to his eye.

Whilst much of my heritage is Scottish, my Grandfather Scoular on my dad’s side was Scottish, my grandfather Lyons on my mother’s side was Irish. I guess that’s why I love all things Celtic and Celtic music in particular.

The song has been recorded literally hundreds of times, and multiple versions of the lyrics exist. However, as far as I can determine these are the traditional lyrics.

From glen to glen, and down the mountain side.
The summer's gone, and all the roses falling,
It's you, it's you must go and I must bide.

But come ye back when summer's in the meadow,
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow,
It's I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow,—
Oh Danny boy, Oh Danny Boy, I love you so!

But if you come, when all the flowers are dying,
And I am dead, as dead I well may be,
Ye'll come and find the place where I am lying,
And kneel and say an "Avé" there for me.

And I shall hear, though soft you tread above me,
And all my grave will warmer, sweeter be,
For you will bend and tell me that you love me,
and I will sleep in peace until you come to me!
