A Wonderful Tool: 'The Atlas of Emotions'

A Wonderful Tool: 'The Atlas of Emotions'

No, I am not Columbus who discovered America, I am just a human being. Yet, this week, a wonderful tool arrived on my path, called 'The Atlas of Emotions'. This is the link: Atlas of Emotions, truly a great gift to the world. Maybe the most enriching discovery to our inner worlds. Great work by Dr. Ekman and supported by the Dalai Lama. A calm mind might be the highest level of wealth a human can achieve. Fear, worry and doubt cannot survive inside a calm mind.

It is fascinating to increase our emotional awareness and understanding. With the tool of Dr. Ekman, we have plenty of opportunities to learn more about our emotions and better understand others. In general, our emotions follow certain patterns. It all starts with a trigger. This trigger creates our emotional experience. Each individual reacts in his or her own way with a unique response. A world of emotional perspectives suddenly appears.

I love how this tool is set up and how clear it is. I believe that every school should teach the insights of the 'Atlas of Emotions' to young children. Imagine what that would do with our children? They would learn at a very young age, what emotions are, how it feels, and how they can best respond to what they are feeling inside their world. We would create a new generation of healthy adults, who are at ease with their emotions and with the ones of others.

We can also use the tool 'The Atlas of Emotions' in a more creative way. Example: I am reading something horrible in the news, someone is angry with me and this brings back the memory of abandonment (trigger), I FEEL fear (emotional experience). I can see how this person would leave me (response). A human being can learn and grow. Now that I know that the trigger 'reading horrible news' let me feel fear, I consciously choose to read positive news.

On the other hand, when we meet someone who starts to argue with us, we could understand that this person FEELS angry, maybe because he or she did not get enough sleep and someone was angry with them, which reminded them of a bully. One thing is sure, the tool leads to more awareness, understanding of self and others and this creates more compassion for the world around us and for ourselves.

We will be much more patient next time when we encounter particular emotional responses. Let us take full responsibility of our (inner) world, learn about triggers and steer our emotional responses. With a calm mind, we can increase our mental capacities and it is better for our heart and soul. Calm minds are the glue for healthy and loving relationships. What will you order for Christmas? I believe the 'Atlas of Emotions' could be the best gift!

I think it's a great idea to teach children about emotions from a very young age and use role reversal as one of many examples included as well. We have to work harder as a Society/Global world at doing so. Too many children grow up in homes that lack emotive skills and how are they to understand if they are the wounded? Many times those who've been wounded become the bullies. This could be a positive change in curriculum for everyone. I've always said that kids need more than Reading, writing and Arithmetic - they need Social Sciences added to the curriculum that is age relevant.

Great buzz and link . I enjoyed reading it immensely. I also loved your writing "A calm mind might be the highest level of wealth a human can achieve. Fear, worry and doubt cannot survive inside a calm mind". I wrote a slideshare presentation on Movement of Emotions. I am considering building on it using your buzz as the springboard. Thank you for this wonderful illumination.
