Post Your Picture with a Pancake? Selfies in Social Media Marketing.
This photo was sent to me by a friend, and I keep seeing this type of marketing and attempts to engage customers by asking them to post a picture, include a hashtag, and come find us at "insert social page here". I have seen them in restaurants, at street fairs, in department stores, and I every time I see one I think to myself, really? Do customers really invest all that time and energy to participate in this? I know the Target dog campaign, was a hit, and went viral, but in general, I think there is a better way to encourage customer participation in social media. When I searched "take a pic with pancake" and #fluffypancakes, I found lots of people out there posting pictures of their breakfasts, they looked yummy, and too many fluffy pancake recipes, but only a few tweets surfaced within the first page of my search that were this campaign and I couldn't be sure until I looked at the tweet. I realize they are probably scattered across many different social media pages.  Only this company knows if it was successful or not. I think sometimes we expect a lot from our customers, and I know businesses can gain more from a selfie campaign, by offering immediate promotions for social posting right there in the business, interacting with customers after a social post via email and text messaging, and using those posts to engage their customers connections on social media. Don't wait for your customer to leave, capture their social media post and reward them with a promotion or entry to a contest there in your business. Anywhere people gather, they will take a selfie. That selfie can be more valuable when your business can capture the data, and that persons connections for future marketing. The goal is to turn those selfies into word-of-mouth social promotion! How are you using selfies to engage customers and promote your business today? I am very interested in what you have tried, what you learned from the campaign, and what was missing? Let's have a conversation!
