CRAB BUCKET SYNDROME, CONFORMITY & JONESTOWN

CRAB BUCKET SYNDROME, CONFORMITY & JONESTOWN

There is a famous saying about crabs that also represents what often happens in social situations when one person is trying to better themselves in a family or a community. If we put a single crab in a lidless bucket, it can escape easily. When we put crabs in together, as soon as one crab elevates it’s self above the rest, others will grab it and pull it back down to force it to share in a mutual and gloomy fate with the rest of them. It’s important to understand what some refer to as “Crab Bucket Syndrome” because it’s all around us impeding our personal growth. People from the ghetto, might simply use the term hatters to describe this same occurrence.

Most people don’t want us to become successful because of their own deep fears and inadequacies. Most people don’t become successful because they fear success. When we have a big dream and are actively working to bring it into full manifestation, it automatically puts others on guard because they are forced to evaluate themselves and ask if they actually did anything they really wanted to do or have they just been complacently living a very stagnant, repressive, predictable and boring life this whole time due to outside influences and their own failures to assert their own individuality. Most people are too afraid to live how they really want. Instead they live for social acceptance because it’s easier.

It’s easier to be on the side of the majority, though the majority is often wrong. Group think and herd mentality is a great danger not only to society, but our individual circumstances. The Holocaust is the best example of the devastation of group think and blind obedience and a more recent example of this is the mass murder that happened at Jonestown in 1978. For years people followed this psychotic man, thinking he would change the world. Ultimately he slaughtered 909 of his followers. Some people refer to the events of Jonestown as a Mass suicide, but it was clearly a mass murder just like the Holocaust. The media wrongly reported that his followers willingly followed their leader into the great beyond by sipping on some cyanide cocktails, but later evidence reveals many of the bodies were dragged back to the site, implying these people fled for their lives. Both Adolf Hitler and Jim Jones used religion as a means to gain control.

When we finally find the courage to live for ourselves it can be meant with hostility, which was the case at Jonestown, when the people were ready to go home, and had an opportunity to leave, there new found courage inspired their leader to murder them. This reason is why most people would rather practice the socially acceptable behavior of their community then follow their higher instincts of what is right and wrong. Roman historian Tacitus said, “The desire for safety stands against every great and noble enterprise." It’s imperative to understand that Jonestown followers thought they were building a new world that would break away from repression and treat people fairly. The people of Jonestown were trying to build an alternative society where they could feel freer than their American counterparts.

It’s imperative to understand the historical context; most of the followers were African Americans coming out of America in the time of the civil rights movement. America was experiencing a political upheaval, a lot of race riots; a lot of blacks were being locked up and imprisoned, lynched and hung. It was easy to convince people Jonestown would be the promise-land. However, it was built in a similar fashion of countries from the past. It started with a promise of hope, and slowly transformed into a dictatorship where power and personal choice were slowly taken away. Jonestown is a minuscule representation of what happens in social institutions that are built on the desire to control, rather than empower, and therefore represents society in a larger picture.

Humans are social creatures. We exist in groups. We are all naturally people pleasers. The problem with being a people pleaser is we try to be what is expected of us, what is encouraged in us, even if it is nothing like who we are at the core. We become what our parents tell us to become, our friends, teachers and preachers. Because the voices of others are so loud and bombarding from an early age, it is easy to lose our identities in the shuffle. We simply are denied access to our inner voices because others demand we do things right away, go to church, go to school, be pretty, popular and straight, sex is bad, money is evil, trust nobody, blacks are thieves, women are horrible drivers, men know better and should be the head of the house. All these things are inaccurate prejudices that are forced into our perceptions.

Everyone’s opinions about the world are introduced to our young fragile minds as fact, and most of the time it is stuffed in our heads in a forceful manner. We have no choice. We are not allowed to escape it until we are older. Overtime, the voices of others start to work like a hammer breaking down our inner fortress, and once we are rubble, they reshape us in any manner they please. Make no mistake, we are all brainwashed from a young age. Some of us realize this and the search for our authentic selves. It is not easy to figure out who we are or what we really believe in. It requires bravery, the ability to go against the grain, decide for ourselves what is right, even if legions of people are declaring we are wrong and ready to persecute us. It takes strength and courage to be authentic in character.

The command man know thyself, is not only philosophical, but it is biblical. Socrates said “The unexamined life is not worth living”.

Just because i'm aware of ugly, doesn't mean i don't appreciate beauty. I will never be a naive girl or a bubble head that just smiles and pretends like everything is fine. It's not a perfect world, that doesn't mean i don't love this world. Yin and yang, dark and light. If you don't recognize both forces in the world, you aren't looking around very good. You have no clue my background. You have no clue what i have endured and personally overcome. This thing where girls are supposed to be sugar and spice and everything nice is getting tiring. I am not all light and i am not all darkness. I am aware. It's ironic you call me self-righteous. You know who was self-righteous was Jim Jones. When you talk about the skill to corrupt, you didn't exactly say this, but you are right i could do many shady things to get ahead and have money, hurt people and better myself, but i am not a wolf, so i don't use my intellect for poison or to scam people. If having integrity means having a very average wallet, than i guess i will buy the knock off detergent and be happy in a 1 bedroom apartment, surrounded by people who love me for me not my money and trust me. Also one can help the rest and get ahead. Bill Gates certainly helps a lot of people. In fact philanthropy is rather good for business. Maybe sometimes a person gives there last time, not because they are self-righteous, but because they can't sleep unless they try to fix it. Because it disgust them, and the thought makes them miserable. And if i have an eye for contempt and controversy as you suggest, perhaps i was born to hunt wolves.

Are you saying you are one of those people who think we don't have room for refugees in America. I completely disagree with you. Yes, we all die, but that doesn't mean everything needs to be shit until we perish. Messes are meant to be cleaned up. This is a minor example, but if an old lady trips and drops her bags right in front of you, you aren't just going to help her up. Maybe i'm misreading what you are saying, but unfortunately, i believe it is ideologies like yours that is what is wrong with the world, people who likely have the resources and and intelligence to help, but choose to do nothing, but look out for their own interests. Everything is on a wheel. Nothing is guaranteed. A violent type could come kick in your door right now, a hacker could steal everything in your bank account. A hurricane could come wipe out your whole city, you could have a stroke and land in a wheel chair. When you are in need should we dust out hands and say too bad you got screwed.I don't think anyone can save the world, but lots of individuals have certainly made dramatic differences, Bono, Thomas Edison, Harriet Tubman, Abraham Lincoln, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, the list goes on and those are just Americans. I've seen kids starve to death, while they are surrounded by food because they don't have money and people are literally more concerned about that one dollar than given them bread. It's ridiculous. Privilege is a word for a reason. Anyone on this site clearly has a certain amount of privilege, wifi, a computer, an education. Great men don't think like you. As rich as Donald Trump is nobody will ever think of him as a great man.

The collective output is such...that's what I have observed and experienced in my limited scope. I do understand that evidence based rationality and faith based stimulus co exist within me, I do not have to conflict one for the other, rather faith triggers understanding and understanding triggers faith, action yields better inputs in times of doubt, fear and confusion...I do not talk about truth because I think its a personal realisation.

I need to understand your expressions better. All that I could comprehend was , theory needs to be tested before its fact. The tests are continuous until the weakness is discovered and its corrupted, its either exploited by few or many, if its few, there is an attempt to replace it with a system to share the spoils, but the few due to better resources eventually rattle the system to recover some of the small percentages they lose to the rest. At a snails pace, the majority are clawing through the insignificantly small because it is necessary, then they pull each other down as an assumed necessity. With technology as the interface we just progress from tactics of oppression to manipulation and have an inhuman alibi without a face, but a collective input... Just like society. It is convenient to have a faceless intangible construct as the enemy, while its ultimately all about people.

Society corrupts and waits for an individual to rise up and solve stuff. That's progress. Then society corrupts and exploits again. One can suffer with the rest or get ahead. Its a choice. Eventually, whatever you do will be corrupted...that too starts at the level of an individual and is copied around. Its easier to copy loopholes of corruption, its like scavenging, no harm there. Problem, if you keep on repeating the rant of bad people, bad society, bad crabs, bad men, bad culture...it slowly gets ingrained in the brain,, an eye for contempt and controversy and you may never enjoy success, this is happening to you subconsciously. The skill to corrupt , which could have been applied to the outer world is not being used because you want to be righteous, but the very skill is turning inwards, it is slyly corrupting your world view, Corruption is denial of the good as well as the bad. This is my opinion, you may disagree, I assume, if you can see a problem with better insights than no one else, you could perhaps develop a solution or a way of life that's progressive , better than everyone else.

The childhood narrative is built, its not chromosomal. Some parents don't realize that children are testing the narrative against them and each child is unique in need. You highlight here the simple concept that our children can leave home and build on their narrative or they will spend a lifetime overcoming. You also introduce another concept that seems to be taboo in discussion. Our freedom of speech and alternative dialogues are part of the issue. Concepts that are presented in ways that touch us through deep emotional/macabre examples leave a lasting impression that forms our narratives. Are these examples of good causes that seek to bend our guilt, or self esteem towards a cause healthy? Parents are complaining about the heightened need to screen TV, internet and various other inroads to our psyche. But its is permeating through social settings of school and other mandated social centers. I agree with freedom of speech but also understand that not all speech is good. Good thoughts here.
