Manuel Chinchilla Da Silva | How to Avoid Fatalities and Injuries in the Oil and Gas Industry
The oil and gas industry is an integral part of the economy. Unfortunately, those who work in the industry are at a high risk for injuries and even fatalities due to the nature of the work. There are ways to reduce the danger to workers and keep them safe.
Ways To Improve Worker Safety In The Gas And Oil Industry
The risks can be high in this line of work. There are ways companies and workers can minimize them. Some things to consider to improve worker safety include:
1.Transportation: One of the main causes of injury and fatality in the industry is accidents and crashes. Ensuring that workers lessen distractions while driving, don't drive while extremely fatigued, and heed weather conditions will go a long way in helping to curb accidents. Enforcing things like driving shift limits and making sure that vehicles are properly maintained will help, also.
2.Reducing Contact Injuries:The workplace in the gas and oil industry is full of dangers like heavy machinery, hoses, lines, and cranes. Accidents where workers are struck or crushed by these objects are common onsite. Giving vehicles alarms, putting up fences or other barriers, and signs can help workers to avoid dangers.
3.Reducing risk of Fires Or Explosion: Onsite, there are numerous flammable materials and vapors along with gas. This can be a recipe for trouble if precautions are not taken. Being mindful of weather conditions such as lightning and humidity is something workers can do. Other things include lowering explosive limits and monitoring oxygen levels. Equipping machinery with features like shutdown systems and spark arrests will boost safety and help prevent fires.
4.Environmental Training: This industry is based outdoors, and can include pits, storage containers, and other areas a worker may get trapped. Teaching workers about electrical safety, asphyxiation, entrapment, and other dangers they may experience can help them navigate and survive them if they happen and potentially prevent accidents.
5.Fall Prevention: Using rails, covering openings, and ensuring workers wear harnesses when doing elevated work can save lives.
The oil and gas industry is demanding. There are ways to make it better for workers and companies. Forethought, training, and implementing safety technology are key to reducing injury and death.
