Re-Inventing Yourself

Re-Inventing Yourself

Start a New

gs 7 at any AGE
I turned in my paperwork for Pratt yesterday. They have some art classes that look interesting to me. School starts next month. The online writing class I want to take is all set up. All I had to do was make a payment for it to start. Now it’s about how much time I have to put into it. Since I have to wait until next year to take the classes I want at Cornish, It’s something to do so I can stay busy.

It would be easier if I could just work. Since I can’t do labor jobs because of my injuries and turn 50 this month I’ll have to compete with guys half my age if I get a job in another field. It looks like I’ll have to go into business for myself.

I’m going to be a contractor again, a different kind than when I was working for the military. This time I’ll be a freelance writer and commercial artist kind of contractor. It will probably be a lot of work on my part, but it can’t be any worse than breaking ice on the deck of a fishing boat and working 18 hours a day out on the Bering Sea.

A lady I see working at Starbucks a lot told me she’s changing her college major from bio-engineering to English literature. I asked her, “So you don’t want to be in the Dr. Frankenstein Club anymore?” Then she surprised me.

She turned to someone else who worked there and said I was the only one who thought she was smart and believed in her. Then she turned to me and said she thought her new major was more interesting. Then she thanked me and said I was the only one who told her she was smart.

I barely know this lady and I probably influenced her enough not to drop out of college! When she told me about wanting to major in bio-engineering I joked with her about joining the Dr. Frankenstein Club. She would need at least a Master’s Degree to get in. If she didn’t want to go to school that long she could be like Igor. That wouldn’t be so bad because Igor was still pretty cool.

She laughed and said that was funny. I guess my smart ass joke was the only encouragement she got. She’s convinced she’s smart and told everyone who works with her that when her blog gets big if they need jobs she’ll hire them.

I guess she’s got big things in the works!

Be careful what you say and joke around about. Some people actually listen.

"Don't give up!
