Something Better
About two weeks ago I went to a two hour class that was about publishing a book people actually want to read. The local library was giving the class. A local author was speaking. She has a few books published.
Some of what she talked about was doing research. Another was how to develop a character. Then there was figuring out how to bring characters together to tell a story. There was more, but that’s what stood out to me.
You never know what you’ll learn when you have some spare time and someone is teaching a free class that looks interesting.
I do a lot of reading as a hobby. It never occurred to me that someone who writes for a living does all that ground-work. I guess that’s why they get paid for writing stories and books. They’re not just some guy writing a blog in his spare time about things he thinks are interesting-like me.
Right now I’m reading Michener’s novel Centennial. He puts a lot of time and effort in his plots and character development. You can tell he’s done lots of research. These are things I never thought about when I’m reading until I took this class. My hat is off to anyone who makes a living writing.
I went to my son’s food truck to buy lunch a couple of days ago. Some new guys were working. Maybe they’re not really new workers, but I hadn’t seen them before.
When I see new faces in my hang outs I wonder what happened to the ones I’m used to seeing there. Since everybody moves on to something better, or at least tries to, maybe I shouldn’t think about it too much.
I hope everyone who reads my blog finds what they want, or something better.
