Two Steps Farward

I was hanging out in a place called the Recovery Café here in Seattle this morning. It’s a clean and sober place. About five or six years ago the problem my family has with diabetes landed on me. I had to stop smoking, drinking, and cut out a lot of processed sugar because I don’t want to take insulin. An elder in the Native Community told me since I had to stop drinking for my health it might be a good place for me.

When I came back here most of the places I used to hang out in have been torn down and there are construction sites where they were at. Now I don’t know very many people here.

They had a meditation class today. I decided to check it out. A guy I trained with in the martial arts was into mediation so I thought I’d check out the class. It turned out to be some kind of church service for a religion in India. I sat through it for a little while to see if I could learn something new.

When the lady who was teaching the class broke out what looked like a Catholic Rosary and told us she was going to lead us in how to pray the 180 beads I got up to leave.

She asked me if I really had to go. I told her my mom is really religious, I don’t have very much to do with her religion, and she raised me. What I didn’t say is I don’t even know her. She might have thought that was too rude. Some people who go there probably need a lot of help with whatever issues they have.

She didn’t seem to mind that I left.

The Café is a good place for me to work on my drawings for my portfolio to get into art school. I finished up with one of my drawings today. The people I’ve met there seem nice. I really don’t know how many people besides the volunteers go there who aren’t recovering from anything. They know I don’t drink for a medical reason and are all polite.

I guess you never know what someone is going through. I read somewhere you should always be kind
