As people age, their bodies don’t work as efficiently. In fact, getting older increases the likelihood of sedimentary behavior, which leads to health complications.

Obviously, exercise is an important aspect of everyone’s life, especially for elderly people. The problem is, many older adults have trouble moving, which creates an unhealthy cycle. Inactivity in older people is also a leading cause of heart disease.

To avoid heart-related illnesses, seniors must participate in physical activities. One of the easiest ways for older people to get adequate exercise is to walk. For optimal results, health experts recommend a brisk walk opposed to a slow stroll.

Why Pace Matters

Despite the old saying “slow and steady wins the race”, walking slow doesn't really benefit elderly heart health. Studies show that older people who walked at a speed of three miles an hour or faster lower their chances of developing heart disease by 50 percent. Walking seven blocks opposed to five at this pace was especially beneficial.

In addition to being healthy, walking is an exercise that many older people can enjoy. It also ensures that older adults can function independently for longer.

Necessary Walking Supplies

Since older people have a harder time being physical, it’s important they use the right equipment to prevent injury. For instance, comfortable walking shoes are essential. Walking shoes make it easier to support body weight, especially while in motion. For elderly people who have issues with their feet, it’s best to speak to a podiatrist about which shoes to purchase.

Also, older people who use stabilizers like a cane should definitely bring it with them during walks. Doing so is good for people who struggle with balance, more so if the walker lives on a hill or uneven land.

Sometimes, a friend is also a necessary walking supply. A walking partner makes exercising a more pleasant experience, as well as increases the amount of physical activity in a safe way.

Getting older doesn't mean giving up on heart health. Therefore, exercise is essential, even if it's only a brisk walk. By walking at least seven blocks at three miles per hour, elderly people have a chance to avoid heart disease.
