Non-Work Priorities for Leaders

Non-Work Priorities for Leaders

As a leader, it can be tempting to prioritize work over everything else in your life. However, by doing so, leaders miss out on important moments in life, their health deteriorates, and they can become resentful of others who spend more time focusing on areas outside of work. If you are a leader, make sure to prioritize the following areas to ensure you maintain a good work-life balance.

Social Time

Spending time with your family and friends is important to maintaining good mental health. Being able to relax and have a fun time can help alleviate stress, improving your day-to-day mood and allowing you to jump back into work feeling refreshed. Schedule some social time at least once per week with your spouse, family, or friends. Completely disconnect yourself from work during this time and be present in the moment to get the most out of your social time.

Alone Time

Like social time, time spent alone is equally as important to your mental health. Spend at least 10 minutes each day doing something you enjoy, such as listening to music, watching TV, or just thinking. Again, try to tune out work completely, as thinking about work will only dampen the effects of taking time away.

Eating

Every leader needs to fuel their body to stay energized for another productive day. Eating nutritious foods will help keep your body healthy, so try to eat fresh, homemade meals several times per week. If you do not have time to eat throughout the day, intermittent fasting may be an option that allows you to eat enough calories without taking up too much time. Be sure to consult your doctor to determine if you need to adjust your eating habits to stay healthy.

Sleeping

Getting at least 7 hours of sleep per night is a necessity for leaders. Some people may even need 8 or 9 hours, so make sure to try out different lengths of sleep to figure out which one makes you feel best. Go to sleep at a consistent time every night and shut off notifications while you’re asleep to have a peaceful rest. Failure to sleep long enough can lead to medical problems, so don’t neglect this important step.

Fitness

Exercising is not everyone’s favorite activity, but moving your body can help you gain energy and keep your body in top shape. Try to get moving at least once per day, and set up longer workouts several times per week. Although you do not need to look like a fitness model to be healthy, your body will thank you in the long run for staying active now.

Taking care of their health helps leaders stay productive in the office. If you prioritize your work duties over any of these areas, take the necessary steps to change that. When looking back, you will be happy you made time for the important things in life.
