Asking for a Raise

Sometimes, it’s a damn dilemma…to ask or not to ask for pay raises.

Frankly, with all the years of dedication, loyalty and sincerity, we are married to our jobs. From the start till now, we are content, happy and pleased for the many benefits and favors. Moreover, we remained restrained and whatever came as bonuses or increments we accepted gratefully.

But, with the changing times, everything has altered in manifold ways. Decades before we were singles, and now we boast about our families, kids and key responsibilities. Nothing is like before and with rising expenses, our salaries are not that sufficient, and with no savings we feel jabbing tribulations. Ah, the burden of cost of livelihoods meddle our minds with hovering thoughts.

We are engaged employees, with no cheating, complaints or lapses. But now, we feel disheartened with no noteworthy progress in our pay scales. With decades of work, in fact, we are tied up to our professions. Neither we can think of dual jobs nor we can opt for different career paths. It’s like our loyal love at our workplaces, and we tell this truthfully that we don’t wish to get disconnected from our present duties.

We know well how some staff, in quest for high salaries and perks, moved to other places. We know well how few of us ascended to senior ranks and others who still remain stagnant with their primitive posts with trivial increase in their salaries. Not that we lament about our destinies or sense jealousy of others’ accomplishments, but we dearly feel that we have been too modest to ask for salary raise. No regrets about our diffidence or lack of confidence.

But now, we realize that how hard it is to cope up with escalating expenses. Constantly, we think about cutting costs and live in simpler terms. We have also abandoned the idea of savings because, at the end of month, only a lesser portion of our salaries remains. Not that we want to improve our standard of living, but we only consider what are essentials and what can be delayed later on.

Perhaps, it’s time to garner little grit and spirit and express our reckonable contributions, it’s time to admit about our abilities, it’s time to remind how truthful and devoted we have been with our goals in the past, it’s time to assure how we aspire further to be regimented in our roles, and at last, it’s time to have some worthwhile change in our remuneration so that we can lighten our encumbrances and ordeals.

Not that we vie to gain specific credentials or brooches of appreciation because, in warrant of our education and expertise, we are capable enough to contribute more and perform our obligations, without any deficiencies and delays. 

In fact, with our humble and straightforward requests for salary raise, we harbor great expectations. Certainly, with significant upsurge in our salaries, we can experience joyous jubilation and major enhancements in our lives.

Thanks Jerry Fletcher for your comments. Truly, it’s understandable that when there are budgetary constraints, low revenue and more overheads, then profits will point diminishing level. Yes, with cost cutting changes and by skipping raises, a clear message from the top management to employees can be conveyed. But then, when outstanding employees contribute more than expected, then they deserve accolades, besides assuring them of possible raises in near future. I believe, that way, employees will have a real boost in their attitudes.

Mohammed, I'm torn. As a CEO I always had to look at the cost of raises versus the possible benefit. Often, I came to the conclusion that no change was the better way. One thing made me consider a raise: when the person defined what the company would gain. There is a quid pro quo in any discussion of a raise. And in many cases the person deciding may not know just what the employee really contributes.
