Drugs Are Not Almonds

Drugs Are Not Almonds

"Here's how it works. First we discover the drug and

identify the market, then we invent the disease.”

For simple uneasiness, twitching pain here and there out of overwork, or insensible notions due to sleep disorders, you don’t rush to see a doctor to have a prescription of half-a-dozen names of medicines.

Perhaps, the fashion of the world is to décor your homes, with appealing and luxurious furniture, fancy buying expensive, gaudy apparels, and when it comes to healthy food and fruits, we care less. No time to eat because we’re less health conscious.

Ugh…when general weakness comes in due to low blood, we aren’t told to eat well and take care of health. On the contrary, physicians are so prompt to handover their prescriptions that patients hurry themselves to buy medicines from drugstores.

Once, a lady was diagnosed as anemic, and her medical report showed that she had low blood. She wasn’t on insurance coverage, and now the clinic had a good opportunity to bill her on cash. Her husband was told that she needs to get admitted into the clinic so that she can be given iron injections and intravenous iron therapy. Although she was discharged next day, but besides taking fruits and figs, she was more inclined towards the clinic, and the poor husband had to take her to the clinic to treat her with three shots of injections on different days.

I remember one doctor who holds an additional diploma in chest diseases besides holding bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery degree certificate. In his initial practicing days, he was passionate enough to prescribe high doses of medicines to kick off malady in short span of time. At one time, he prescribed tablets of high dosage to a patient, and the result was no cure, but caused hearing loss in one ear of that poor patient.

That same doctor, on another occasion, prescribed medicine to a lady, and she reported temporary blurring of vision.

Once I saw my good friend in a clinic. I asked him, “Is everything okay?”

“Yea…came to visit the doctor for a quota of monthly medicines,” he uttered casually. I understood that he might be on regular medications for diabetes.

Sometimes, people’s intake of food is less, and they survive more on medicines. Imagine a person, with hypertension, diabetes, body pain, cold and cough, checks in to a clinic, and comes out of a pharmacy, in a relaxed mood, carrying a bag of medicines, as if carrying a little sack of ‘dry fruits and nuts’.

When we lack patience and precepts of wisdom, we become agitated and annoyed, and with this symptoms if we approach a doctor, we’re simply told that we have become a victim of hypertension. Now, there’s a pill for that. Well, a person of depression needs timely counsel and encouragement, not a pack of tranquilizers that sooner or later makes him addicted to those medications.

Who cares to dig the real information from BIG pharma? Sometimes, with too many shortcomings, it’s a paid biased research, and in some cases, there are incomplete clinical trials or just random findings to convince the world with evidence based medicines.

When a patient walks into a clinic to see some specialist doctor, presumably the doctor will least bother to know about patient’s lifestyle, the history of prevailing ailment, or check the patient’s emotions and mood. In brevity, it will be a simple query and with little diagnosis followed by investigative tests, the doctor vigorously prescribes ‘drugs’ and a tidbit advice to the patient for some dietary options.

In fact, it’s best to keep one’s blood pressure in control by taking curry leaves or chewing a clove of garlic. Natural remedies really works, and if at all one takes, at one time, more in quantity, there are no side-effects. But, any wrong dose, overdose or different brand of blood pressure medication can jeopardize a person’s health. Ultimately, the question is what happens when adverse effects, with doctor’s prescribing, land a patient in hospital?

Perhaps, more than box of pills, powders, therapies and unwanted tests, shouldn’t we flip our lives with more focus on good food, routine exercise and happiness?

Drugs are not almonds, they are cheaper, easily available, subsidised and make the poor feel that they are cared for, it's the damn doctor who overcharged that is the culprit How easily an individual can be corrupted into becoming a scapegoat, patients being the evident ones, doctors and pharmacists being the eventual ones and scientists/drug discoverers being the eternal ones wherein combinations , side effects and critical information is witheld easily to be blamed on an individual after decades of exploitation. Still, being the hopeful citizen, we immerse ourselves into precautions and preventive measures because the Pharma industry does enough to keep us hopeful and holds the rest to squeeze us dry. Moreso where the Law permits it and the Society are guinea pigs.

debasish majumder Aha...those remarks give me a hearty chuckle! So, at the end, a poor patient is made scapegoat.

So many medicines produced today have more serious side effects than the illness they were produced to treat. Maybe that's big Pharma's goal... make them sicker so they require more meds! Good buzz

Mohammed Sultan Thanks for reading and commenting on this post. Yes, when Big Pharma spends millions and billions in the name of R&D, then it will definitely look for a bigger market that can churn huge profits. Once the markets are explored, there's all gimmicks for pre-launch, real launch, post launch activities. Now, it depends how pharma treats physicians, specialists and key opinion leaders (KOLs) so that they begin prescribing their products. That's after all tactical promotion!

Harvey Lloyd Thanks for your insightful comments. When one delves deep for information, it becomes clear the way BIG pharma sets out weird strategies. Imagine when a country’s population is suffering from malnutrition, then greedy pharma companies think how they can capture market by creating novel products to treat malnutrition. Sometimes, more than beneficial nourishment, we treat our bodies with dangerous, toxic chemicals. Because, so much is in publicity and has become common that even if you aren't diseased, you feel or you are told that got to have a total health scan. If there's anything that's a different story and there are more options of treatment with the damn availability of insurance coverage. Even if it’s little stammering or simple timidity, then pharma would take it a potential opportunity to come up with some concoction or capsules, brand it and promote it in the market so that psychiatrists can begin writing prescriptions. Funny, isn’t it?

Ali Anani Yes, with little cold and cough, we oftentimes look for syrups and tablets, and we forget that our ‘kitchen is the hub of many medicines’. When a simple, safe home remedy doesn’t work, then you should better consult a doctor. Glad to know you’ve found a way out to keep your BP in control. May the Almighty Lord bless you with health and longevity!

Body chemistry as much as we would like to think we have cracked the cause and effect model, we haven't. I would like to think that the advancement of science is good. How we use it though is really the question. With so many advancements and the ironic "branding" efforts of hospitals and pharma it is becoming incumbent on the patient to understand various options. Long gone are the days of throwing ourselves at the doctor and seeking life. I also believe that man has lost its thoughts on the finite and fragile conditions of life. Branding efforts have us thinking that life is fixable at any stage of existence. This is a false argument used by many in the commercial healthcare industry. Even politicians who promote healthcare promote it from a false argument. Healthcare is not a fix. Life style is the major aspect of life experience and ultimately health, as you have stated very wisely here . Humans will have to learn, when it comes to healthcare we cant by the "brand" but must weigh options and outcomes.

Very interesting topic . You wrote "In fact, it’s best to keep one’s blood pressure in control by taking curry leaves or chewing a clove of garlic". I shared my own story, but would like to repeat it here. For more than 20 years I had medicine for treating my high blood pressure (reached sometimes 180/120). Only three months ago my doctor (new one) told me to drink lots of water because I neglected my body needs for water for years. I did. Now my blood pressure is very stable (last 8 weeks reading invariably 110/70). I agree with you and using drugs should be left as a last choice.
