It’s Like Trying To Run On One Leg
Our focus on doing intellectual labor without the development of emotional intelligence is like trying to run a race on one leg. Intellect was never intended as a substitute for a lack of emotional intelligence. They were meant to work together to produce synergistic results. After leaving school it is EQ, not IQ that is the most critical factor in our success.
In its report "The Future of Jobs & Skills", the World Economic Forum declared that emotional intelligence will be one of the Top-10 most required skills by 2020.
Whatever you role, the development of your emotional intelligence will have noticeably positive impact on your results. Emotional intelligence is developed from doing emotional labor. Emotional labor (EQ) multiplies the effectiveness of intellectual labor (IQ) while reducing drama, chaos and conflict. As a result engagement levels increase because others feel safer to lower their walls in your presence. Emotional intelligence is your greatest individual and organizational asset. With the accelerating rate of innovation and change the growing importance of emotional intelligence has become inevitable.
Until recently the focus has been on IQ and experience with little or no awareness when it came to emotional intelligence. As a result there exists a much wider range of variation in emotional intelligence among executives within organizations. Companies are being to hire and promote people based largely upon emotional intelligence. Few of these organizations realize that it can be developed. Emotional intelligence can be developed through the process of doing emotional labor. Emotional intelligence refers to the ability to mindfully perceive, control and evaluate emotions. It is the ability to be consciously aware of the feelings of one’s self and others and to use this information to guide one's thinking and actions.
