Q: Can a person train their emotional intelligence?

The answer is yes, you can be trained to develop your emotional intelligence. The emotional labor that leads to emotional intelligence needs to become part of the essential skills training companies offer their employees. Our educational system has failed us by neglected to teach us the importance and value of doing the emotional labor necessary for the development of our emotional intelligence. This responsibility has shifted to employers as a result of the crushing drama, chaos and disengagement they are experiencing.

Our level of emotional intelligence is fundamental to our success. It is the essential education needed to embrace the unimaginable challenges that lies before us. Business schools could teach leadership and emotional intelligence but sadly they do not – instead they have teach compliance. With the accelerating rate of innovation and change the growing demand for emotional intelligence training is inevitable.

We were never taught the importance and connection between emotional labor, emotional intelligence and authentic leadership. The emotional labor of "chewing glass and staring into the abyss of failure" is occasionally required for us to achieve our desired results.

We need to educate our emotions. This new type of education reflects the future of organizational and cultural development. Virtually all of the top business schools profess to develop leaders, yet their efforts are widely viewed as falling short. The whole world is engulfed in a revolution. We are in the midst of a rapid change revolution that will destroy the status quo and enable the impossible. These changes will be so fast, and so profound, that every aspect of our society will be transformed.

Business as usual will not produce the awareness needed to tackle global challenges and opportunities that are now before us. The emotional labor that leads to emotional intelligence has become part of the essential skills training that companies must make available to their employees. The faster this occurs the better for all of us.
