Q: Why not start a weekly gratitude journal?

What are you grateful for? Our brain is often trapped in a sea of negativity. On one hand, it has evolved to keep us alive, on the other hand it tends to make us a little neurotic from time to time. When we are consumed by the negative and miss the 99% of things that are going right in our life. Unfortunately our evolutionary wiring tends to focus our attention on the negative side of life. Scientists call this the negativity bias. It regularly causes us to raise our walls as we gradually become more resistive, judgmental and attached to outcome.

Gratitude requires an appreciation of the opportunity to serve. It has the power to reshape our neural network pathways. Our immune system can sense our emotions. The feeling of gratitude releases the neurotransmitter dopamine. Dopamine feels good which is why it is considered the “reward” neurotransmitter. Dopamine is also important in creating the motivation to take action.

Gratitude requires an appreciation of the positive aspects of a situation. An increase in gratitude could have such wide-ranging effects as increased exercise, improved sleep, lower blood pressure, decreased stress and fewer aches and pains. The attitude of gratitude will enable us to lower our walls as we learn to become less resistive, judgmental and attached to outcome.
