Emotionally Contagious Leadership
If a leader resonates authentic energy and enthusiasm an organization thrives. If a leader spreads negative energy and dissonance it flounders. Whether positive or negative, emotions can spread like an emotionally contagious energy virus throughout an organization. The mirror neurons in our brain are able to resonate with the energy of the person actually having the experience just as if we were the ones having that experience.
Our ‘open-loop’ emotional system depends on external sources to manage itself. We catch the feelings or mood of the others in the group. By contrast, an example of a closed-loop system is our body’s circulatory system which is self-regulating. The emotions and energy we choose to surround ourselves with has a huge impact on our results. The process whereby the behavior of an individual or group of individuals gradually begins to spill over and affect the behavior of the group as a whole is called emotional contagion.
In order to create a safe business environment where employee failure and innovation are encouraged the need for authenticity and emotional intelligence is essential. This will lead to superior individual and organizational results. Innovation requires trust and the feeling of safety. You must believe that the people you work with have your back. Authentic emotionally intelligent individuals would never sacrifice your safety for their personal benefit. When your people feel safe to take risks so will your customers. This is how highly effective organizations are developed.
