Would You Like To Relocate?
When you are brave enough to say "Good Bye" Life will reward you with a new "Hello"..Paulo Coelho
When I started working, I was relatively closer to my home base and my near and dear ones. As the urge to "move up the ladder" caught up,so was the distance.
Somewhere in this "journey" I left my country to a foreign land. Got married and in the process my better half also got relocated !
Responsibilities and other such, made me relocate again. This time back to my country but to a new city as that is where I had to take up a new job. Also my son was born and we grew to 3!
After several years I got another "career enhancement opportunity" and a better job in a more promising city,I took it up in the process again relocating (2005), and this time it was three of us on the move! Been fortunate since then,as I have been able to hold on to this city (Bangalore).
I have said "no" to several opportunities (which would have made me relocate again) since the change in the way I work happened in the year 2012. But I fought with that urge to get away from this city by reassuring myself every now and then that this is the city that I would like to call home.So that has been some stability for the family I guess. But then still someone calls up mentioning me about that wonderful opportunity which exists on the "another side of the globe ,"I am still tempted! to tell them I am willing to relocate and take up new challenges".Well, not very strictily a relocation in the current nature of my work.Being a consultant and running my own setup, at least I am in a better position now wherein I could take regular periods of outstation consulting works and still get back to my base as and when required.
So we need to assess every situation, and we need to be flexible enough to accept new challenges and move on and move ahead and if required move away from base location too.Mind you,As one grows(professionally and otherwise!) ,these relocation woes also grows.
As a bachelor one is happy to explore.May be the adventure spirit and vagabond nature enables one to get far away and take up jobs and find meaning and purpose to life even in a new place.
Some are lucky that they could settle and call that place home. But not many! Some get back to the roots after certain degree of success.May be some would find it even convenient to relocate with the added responsibility of the family also.Brave few?!The next stage, that is addition to the family and with that the equation changes again.May be making it difficult for some to take a further move..Then the whole thing stabilizes again after several years when kids have grown up and become independent; .But then if health permits,"then" you could again take that "journey" to work and live in a new place having acquired a new degree of freedom.
What happens during the process of every relocation?
You lose several things... The safety net of a known city...Advantage of knowing where to go for what , Over the number of years being in the same place one would have generated comfort factor with the city ...Endless such small and not so trivial things could be added to this list....
But, what advantages the relocation would bring in ?..........Prospect of starting all new life elsewhere?......Being able to develop new contacts? .....Going ahead in life with renewed enthusiasm to take up new challenges?.....Trying to find new meaning and purposes to life and work?
....There could be many more that you could add to this list
I like this quote, sharing it with you all as this pretty much sums up this discussion very nicely! "Move on, it's just a chapter in the past. But don't close the book just turn the page"
