What If You Lost Everything?
Ā
Everyone is scared of something. When you get down to the root of fear, it usually relates to loss. So itās completely understandable to be scared of losing a loved one, or something thatās incredibly valuable to you. But my question isĀ "what about material things?"
Iām not really talking about sentimental things. Iām talking about what you spend your money on- your nice clothes, your big TV and gaming system, your new car, and your house.Ā Do losing these items bring fear into your life. God will always provide your Needs, yet I am talking about your Wants, and Desires.
Take a moment a joint down How Many āThingsā Do You Have? NOW, Reading through that list, how many of those things do you own, and how attached have you become to them?
We are all materialistic to a certain extent- and Iām not trying to have a dig. I understand that some people genuinely do care a lot about their possessions. Itās often not the possession theyāre attached to, though- itās the amount of effort that theyāve put in to buy or earn those things in the first place.
We sometimes view material things as showing the outside world how well weāre doing. The loss of such things, then, is not always about whether or not your TV has disappeared- itās more about appearing to be a failure to those around you. I still remember a time, when an associate came to my home. He turned on the TV and wanted to watch cable. He said, "Something is wrong with your TV."Ā I replied, "No, I don't have cable." My associate replied back, "I'm Sorry."
At first, it was hurtful. Then I remember why I cancelled my cable in the first place. I was throwing a $100 away a month at something I did not watch anymore. In his eyes, this material possession was a sign of success. I viewed it as a wasteful expense, that I could invest elsewhere.
What would you do if you lost everything right now.
Imagine waking up tomorrow to an empty bank account, no friends, no followersā¦ nothing. You have no product, no blog, no business, zilch. All you had left was any knowledge you have, and a few hundreds bucks.
I thought about that question for a while, because itās something I get asked a lot.Ā What would I do, if I lost it all and needed to get back quickly?
As an example, many people would love to go into business, but theyāre worried about the risks involved.
I get it, none of us want to go bankrupt.Ā But what if the worst happened. What if you went into business, it failedā¦..and you went bankrupt?
Youād lose all of your prized possessions....House, cars, TV, all gone. Iād like to ask you to take a minute now, and just consider what would happen. Be realistic- seriously ask yourself how youād deal with it. Would you have to move back in with your family, or stay with friends? What would you do first? Would you immediately look for a job, just to get you back on your feet? What would your top priority be? Whatās your worst fear in all this- is it being judged as a failure by those around you?
Why Am I Asking Such A Brutal Question?Ā
Because I was always taught that if youāre going to get over a fear, you need to face it head on. One of my biggest fears is losing everything. Iām not a materialistic person, but I am very attached to the memories of my houses.Ā
If the worst happened, Iād have to sell my houses and declare bankruptcy. That would be the absolute worst of the worst (financially). How would I feel? When I first asked myself this question, I felt like I would absolutely destroyed by it. And yes, even though I claim that I donāt care what anyone else thinks, it would still bother me to be seen asĀ that much of a failure in the eyes of others.
This is why I have been building my PLAN B. My final goal is for my PLAN B to one day replace my family's PLAN A. Until then, I have security of a feeling of a safety net around me.
Most people have never even considered a PLAN B. All they have is their Job or Career they work full-time. You should be considering a PLAN B. Nobody knows the future. My wife's company just last year closed, yet I was still working. My home business is my PLAN B. It is and was our safety net during that time of need while she found another career. I keep building it during my spare time.
