Branding Sophia: AI vs Human Capital
We have come to a point in our lives where the life of an Artificial Intelligence is worth more than any with a melanin ratio that has been deemed unacceptable. The term “artificial intelligence” (AI)-"referring to the use of computer systems to perform tasks that normally require human understanding…has been around for nearly 60 years. (…) Our increasingly sophisticated understanding of how the human brain works and our ability to embed brain-like elements into computers have engendered such capabilities as voice and pattern recognition, natural language learning, and machine learning.” The reality of AI deployment will lead to an imbalanced world if not addressed quickly by countries’ leadership as there are approximately 900 companies working in the AI arena as the market for consumer and business robots is expected to rise to 1.5 billion US dollars by 2019 and to be worth 16.06 billion US dollars by 2022. With 40 percent of the world’s population now online, and with more than 2 billion smartphones being used; these AI companies are creating data assets, which essentially “describe our behaviors, interests, knowledge, connections and activities at a level of granularity that has never existed”.
We are now at a crossroads where humanlike machines meets spiritual beings, and our unique coding is explained in our DNA- “deoxyribonucleic acid, a self-replicating material present in nearly all living organisms as the main constituent of chromosomes. It is the carrier of genetic information” that can serve as the basis for replicating, recreating and reinstating any being at any time. Strangely enough the DNA “consumer genetic testing market was valued at 70 million US dollars in 2015, but estimates expect it to expand to 340 million US dollars by 2022.” By gradually collecting DNA’s as it allows a multitude of creations and alteration to human kind, the DNA business is ever-growing as “the largest DNA database in the world is the National DNA Index System (NDIS), created… in 1994”. It is vital for us to address AI as the next 10 years, and on ward, will be critical to our existence. As we continue to shelve or shape our mores, such reality had me curious enough to research and write this blog to further explore the Branding of Sophia - what is this growing industry that has taken many by storm? What is an AI, the value of AI and the effects of it?
What is an AI?
The etymology of Artificial is "’not natural or spontaneous’, ‘a work of art; skill; theory, system’, ‘made by man, contrived by human skill and labor’" and Intelligence is “understanding, knowledge, power of discerning; art, skill, taste” and taking the definition of Wikipedia, Artificial Intelligence is defined as “intelligence displayed by machines, in contrast with the natural intelligence (NI) displayed by humans and other animals. In computer science AI research is defined as the study of "intelligent agents": any device that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of success at some goal. Colloquially, the term "artificial intelligence" is applied when a machine mimics "cognitive" functions that humans associate with other human minds, such as "learning" and "problem solving".
As per the term coined by John McCarthy and defined by the enhanced capabilities of machine learning, early “research in the 1950s focused on exploring topics like problem solving and symbolic methods; and in the 1960s, the US Department of Defense began training computers to mimic basic human reasoning, which set stage for the automation and formal reasoning that we see in computers today, including decision support systems and smart search systems that can be designed to complement and augment human abilities. For example, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) completed street mapping projects in the 1970’s and by 2003 DARPA produced intelligent personal assistants, long before Siri, Alexa or Cortana” were brands we consumed today. Even though we have indirectly or directly funded these waves of mechanics and automation, which is ultimately designed to increase the competitiveness amongst one another as well as escalate the chase for our own entrepreneurial pursuit, the AI industry is supposedly segmented to improve, enhance or augment human existence.
In quest to reach the optimal, the current “prototype chip has 256 neuron-like nodes, surrounded by more than 262,000 synaptic memory modules. That is impressive, until one considers that the human brain is estimated to house up to 100 billion neurons” hence “biochemical systems with artificial intelligence—or at least some basic, decision-making capabilities—could have powerful applications in medicine, chemistry, and biological research” just to name a few. Author Mahoney wrote “Humans store about 109 bits of information in their DNA and another 109 bits in high level long term memory, but the latter varies more from person to person, and collectively makes up most of the knowledge that machines need to know to do what we do”. As we have entered a door of no return by giving AI personhood and branding Sophia, we are at a critical juncture in our human evolution where our DNA’s become our IP and our value on this planet.
The irony, Sophia originates from the country that has been known as the cradle of civilization and where Lucy was found. The team members of Ethiopian origin were engaged in building Sophia in Ethiopia- in a country that has biblical ties and historical significance. Moreover, Sophia holds Saudi Arabian citizenship, the same country that has expelled Ethiopians and other Africans deemed unworthy and worthless. We will be competing with Sophia and her kind. Though unlike Sophia, we have flesh and blood, and are generally divinely birthed by male and female parents that carry a spirit with unique DNA and lineage to this earth, ancient enough to continuously trace back our roots to the first human ancestry. And in quest for humanoids with organic intelligence, Sophia will eventually become as archaic as Ardi.
The value of an AI
In 21st century, we share an environment that is mechanized and automated having to constantly prove our individual value for equitable returns. The difference between an AI and human capital is the ROI for companies, which deploys these AIs to compete for the same jobs many have incurred exorbitant amounts of debt to gain the necessary education in hopes of securing a salaried job. As written in Techcrunch “AI-enabled automation of knowledge work could cut employment costs by 9 trillion US dollars by 2020 (BAML)”, thus it is safe to say that America is currently clearing its path for better human management while establishing the road for AI deployment. According to the World Economic Forum “automated systems are on track to replace more then five million workers by 2020” and "AI will generate 2.3 million jobs, exceeding the 1.8 million that it will remove".
Understanding as well as accepting the value set for melanin-carrying humans, the issue of immigration is not necessarily about hate and disregard towards what is considered colored, it is about preparing for our coexistence with AI deployment where robotics parts and built bodies will be the norm. To ensure that remuneration is attributed to its kind, securing the wealth of nations has to translate into the gross national wellbeing of the USA that is dependent on jobs. If “whites were the only racial or ethnic group in which Baby Boomers (27% of whites) outnumbered Millennials (21%) in 2015” then as any leader who has the benefit of his people at heart, will act upon the virtues of nationhood founded on preservation. Acknowledging that "white children will become a minority of children under age 18 well before 2020” and understanding the wealth of nations is measured by it’s Natural, Produced and now Human capital, then the reaction that we are experiencing is solely based on protecting and conserving what has been perceived as an entitled society. The greatest experimental marketplace is confronted at this stage to choose between its virtues and the wellbeing of its own nation given that research from Forrester predicts that 16% of jobs in the USA will be lost over the next 10 years as a direct result of AI and related technologies.
In the 4th industrial era, we are moving into a world with complete disregard for those labeled and categorized as person non-grata when “all non-Africans descend from a single migration of early humans from Africa”. What is right in this process is the fact that being a Westerner does not only mean holding a passport or being naturalized or even paying taxes, it means upholding the values of Westphalia, marching with self-determination, changing one’s mindset and shedding “traditional” behaviors as well as practices while propelling the Western Mindset. Robotics is merely the beginning of this accelerated reality given the march towards creating the most refined AI with cognitive abilities and perfected emotional IQ that will make the humankind finally obsolete not only in the workforce but also in human evolution.
How it will transform our world
We have become merciless, as the survival of the fittest means that anyone excluded from the wealthy 1% or 10% are no longer needed. We know where the wealth is aggregated and that the white male population is decreasing as reported by the Public Religion Research Institute which states “Christians overall remain a large majority in the U.S., at nearly 70 percent of Americans. However, white Christians, once predominant in the country’s religious life, now comprise only 43 percent of the population”. The US census has categorized people from the Middle East as part of the white population though have now proposed to establish subcategories in which specific races fit. According to the U.S. Census Bureau “in 2014 there were more than 20 million children under 5 years old living in the U.S., and 50.2 percent of them were minorities”. This insightful article on Politico highlights that in “the census of 2050, the United States will no longer have a clear white majority—at least as we define “white” today. Fifty-three percent of the population will be multiracial or nonwhite, compared with less than 40 percent currently”. So when the wellbeing of a nation is dependent on jobs, and those jobs are being eliminated or replaced by AI productivity then we should not be surprised by the retort of this disappearing yet supreme race.
The effect of AI in the workforce is sometimes overwhelming as the reports and briefs from Accenture, Frontier economics and McKinsey Co. (just to name a few) expose the irreversible reality that:
- The world’s first operational Robocop in Q2 2017 graced the law enforcement in UAE.
- By 2019, the International Federation of Robotics estimates that the number of operational industrial robots installed in factories would grow to 2.6 million from just 1.6 million in 2015.
- By 2035, AI will increase economic growth an average of 1.7% across 16 industries with financial services climbing to 1.2 trillion US dollars.
- In 2035, AI profitability will have the most positive effect on education, accommodation and food services, and construction industry.
- By 2035, AI technologies have the potential to boost average profitability rates by 38% and lead to an economic increase of 14 trillion US dollars.
It is reported, “Businesses that have adopted AI technologies expect their revenues to increase by 39% and costs to drop by 37% by 2020.” We all know that low-skilled jobs are going to disappear in America- for that matter almost everywhere in the world - and those who have been deemed illiterate and are likely to be dependent on the system are barred from joining the western world. Between AI exploitation and the preservation of the white race, branding Sophia in 21st century makes it the perfect combination for Arabia-USA relations as the International order and security of the New World is being finalized. Every developed and sovereign state has activated ‘the cleanse’ of their nationhood, which requires individuals' to define their worth and value in time that contributes in countries’ prosperity.
Where do we go from here?
Even though the pretext of trade has been provided to revamp the human population, “only 13 percent of those jobs were lost due to international trade. The vast remainder, 85 percent of job losses, stemmed from “productivity growth” — another way of saying machines replacing human workers”- and that was in 2016. Furthermore “ArkInvest predicts that 76 million U.S. jobs will disappear in the next two decades — almost 10 times the number of jobs created during the Obama years”. From the President of the USA to the youthful gentleman recognized as the galvanizer of Europe and as banal as Justin Timberlake the entertainer launching AI, the white man quest for ‘justice for all’ is being redefined in 21st century.
Utilizing one’s platform may create dissonance and it does not only mean taking the mic at a press conference or typing away on social media. When each stakeholder aims to awaken those who are complicit and silent about their own interpretations of humanity’s atrocities and the eventual destruction of our earth, the message is always in peril. Yes, each one is projecting the value for their primary nation and Justin through his music personifies his perception of our current realities from the perspective of “the southern man”, going as far as screening the world’s injustice while an ashy indigenous child yells "wake up". These redundant messages of children crying and mothers whaling was once upon a time a powerful voice and optics, though today, any musician and entertainer like him or JayZ who expresses their artificial intelligence may be applauded for an uplifting as well as empowering message or condemned as the artistry can be devoid of authenticity and authority.
So I conclude with this… History has proven we continue to be destructive beings and it is adverse to conscious capitalism that the value of some people is exponentially greater than many. Between the Western mindset and branding Sophia as the first Saudi citizen, 2017 has set the tone for the future. So as much as we have seen the fury about AI and machine learning, what would be an ethical and equitable coexistence?
