Hollywood Stars Grace Covers of Life in mid-1940s
These are covers of Life Magazine, featuring Hollywood stars during the mid-1940s.
Beginning is Jimmy Stewart in uniform; Ingrid Bergman; Spencer Tracy; and, of course, Bob Hope and Bing Crosby.
I discovered a treasure trove of Life and Look magazines from the mid-1940s, in the attic of my parent's first house. There are also a few copies of McCall's, Better Homes and Gardens, and U.S. Camera.
I'm assuming that whomever stashed these gems away had an interest in photography.
The American magazine was published weekly from 1883 to 1972. In 1936, it was purchased by Time Magazine founder Henry Luce. He shifted the magazine from humor and general interest to photojournalism.
From 1972 until 1978, it was published intermittently as a "special." It became a monthly from 1978 until 2002.
There are also a few issues from the late-1960s and early 1970s, most notable is the one featuring a cover shot taken during the shootings at Kent State University in 1970
