Why walk the Camino de Santiago

Have you heard of the Camino de Santiago? If not, it is a series of pilgrim routes across Europe, taking you across Spain, Portugal, France, and you can even take a Camino from England. Of course, you do not need to be religious in order to walk the Camino – you can embark on this adventure for any number of other reasons.

Here are some of the kinds of people who you are likely to meet on the Camino:

Why walk the Camino de Santiago

The nature lover

Enjoying nature is something you can do each step of the Camino. Whichever route you end up choosing, there will be beaches, woodlands, countryside, mountains and seascapes to bask in, and you will truly get to know a certain area of the country you are visiting. No other form of holiday will offer this chance.

The adventure lover

The walk itself is adventure enough - after all, you will be spending most of your time outdoors, with nothing but the landscape keeping you company, meeting new people in the villages, swapping stories, sleeping under a different roof, speaking a new language, exploring different cultures, and trying foods you have never tried before.

The devout

Of course, there are those who will walk the Camino because they believe in walking in walking the Camino, and they actually wish to go on a pilgrimage. Even if you don’t share their beliefs and their faith, you need to admire them for it, and respect them for it. In fact, these are some of the most interesting conversations you can have on the Camino – exchanging ideas with people who have a completely different belief system to your own.

Those in need of a break

Some of the Camino routes can take you a month or more to complete, which is a great way to distance yourself from the daily grind, and all the stress you are facing. There will be no Internet to distract you, there will be no phone service, and no one will be there to talk to you about the everyday issues. This is nothing but the perfect chance to think about your life, distance yourself from your work and your family, take a deep breath, and see where you are, and where you want to be.

Those wishing to shed a few pounds

Walking is an amazing form of exercise, and you will not believe how much good it can do for you. It’s not like the gym, it’s not a chore, and there is no better way to make yourself walk more than go on a walking holiday with friends or family. The road will be there every day to remind you what you have set out to accomplish, and it will feel neither difficult nor like something you are forced to do.

Those looking to find themselves

Like I’ve mentioned above, if you are looking to look at your life from a new angle, you need to put some distance between yourself and your life. Nothing like the Camino to do just that. You can make sure very important decision while walking, as walking is great for boosting your mental processes, and your mood. You will not make any rash choices – as you will have plenty of time to think about them, and think about them again.

I hope you are now convinced that walking the Camino de Santiago is great for everyone – don’t think you can’t do it, or that it’s not for you. Exposing yourself to different cultures and different landscapes will do you nothing but good, and you will return to your life a better version of yourself.
