Great Music Industry Podcasts
Podcasts have erupted in recent history. It makes a lot of sense when you think about it. There are thousands of different shows across different genres and subject matter. You can likely find a show on almost anything, and this includes music business and the music industry. That being said, here are a few podcasts to check out if you’re in the music industry.
Produced by CD Baby, the DIY Musician Podcast is full of great things to learn if you’re interested in the music industry. They give plenty of do it yourself strategies that are great for any thriving musician as well as keeping up with music news. Topics covered include Spotify playlisting, Facebook Live, release strategies and branding to name a few. The show is run by Kevin Breuner, CD Baby’s head of marketing as well as Chris Robley, who runs CD Baby’s DIY Musician Blog. The great thing about both hosts is that they both understand how challenging it is to be a musician these days, so there’s a sense of empathy that can be hard to find in other podcasts.
If you’ve ever been curious about the songwriting process, And The Writer Is… is the show for you. The host is a guy who goes by the name Ross Golan, and if you didn’t know, he’s one of the most successful songwriters of today. He’s written songs for artists such as Maroon 5, Selena Gomez and One Direction if that gives you an idea. Each episode is great because they take a deep dive into the songwriting process, as well as co-writing. Ross usually has a guest that is also in the songwriting business and has included people such as Jack Antonoff and Julia Michaels, plus a whole lot more.
Michael Brandvold and Jay Gilbert have been doing marketing in the music industry for ages, so it makes sense that they’d want to share their knowledge and discuss with others. That’s why they started doing The Music Biz Weekly. Both hosts have run successful marketing campaigns for big-name artists so they have plenty of knowledge to discuss. Some of the topics they tend to cover include VIP Programs, blockchain, release schedules, and sync licensing.
A great podcast if you’re more actively involved in the business side of the music industry, Dan Steinberg and Luke Pierce run this podcast. Steinberg is the co-founder of Emporium Presents, a promoter that promotes shows all over the United States. Steinberg tends to go very in-depth with who works where, and who left what agency to go to another agency, which is why this is recommended for people more actively involved in the industry. Dan and Luke tend to have fellow promoters and booking agents as guests. This article was originally publishes on RichardFunchess.com
