CTA: Don’t act without being aware of what led you to act in the first place.

Part One: CTA = The Equation; what equals ACTION?

In order to help simplify a complex process I will attempt to put it into an equation.

Equations are linear representations of non-linear realities. Mathematical minds know how to translate abstract non-linear realities into linear equations because the language of mathematics is abstract and non-linear. You just have to know how to speak it. I don’t.

I refer to the language I speak as conceptual. So, I will now attempt to put into a conceptual language the equation of action or movement. You will let me know if I succeeded in my attempt.

Conceptual definitions of the factors being used in this equation.

The Result:

A=ACTION: an act of will; the fact or process of doing something, typically to achieve an aim.

The Process:

1. S=SENSATION: a mental process (as seeing, hearing, or smelling) resulting from the immediate external stimulation of a sense organ often as distinguished from a conscious awareness of the sensory process.

We are sensory beings. As the amniotic fluid is a greater sound carrier than water, our sensory environment begins in utero. As well as the auditory stimulation that occurs, the fetus experiences movement. After birth, our experiences continue to be shaped, formed and influenced by what we hear, see, smell, taste, touch, as well as experience proprioceptively and vestibularly. Our Central Nervous System is continuously perceiving, sorting, choosing and responding to information received through our sensory system.

2. P=PERCEPTION: the state of being or process of becoming aware of something through the senses.
3. Mn=MEANING: what is meant by a word, text, concept, or action.

Over the years, we collect and store our sensory experiences. We form memories and we construct meanings.

4. T=THINKING: the action of using one's mind to produce thoughts.
A thought is “the action or process of thinking.” When we think, we are “directing” our mind and our mind is “actively” engaged.
5. K=KNOWING: the state of being aware or informed.

Kh=Knowing how

Kw=Knowing why

AbK=Abstract based Knowledge

RbK=Rooted based Knowledge

I am carrying over the sensory process here and discussing knowing as a sense. All that we know is acquired physically as a result of our sensory experiences and the associations and meanings formed through our Central Nervous System. For example, what does it mean to be standing at a red traffic light? 1. We see the red traffic light. 2. We know what colour is and that this light has the colour red. 3. We know that red means stop. Knowing is the sense that allows us to engage in our physical world.

When we call what we know an idea, we define it as: “a thought or suggestion as to a possible course of action.” An idea leads to action.

We share our sensory system with the animal kingdom but one factor that differentiates humans beyond our senses is our ability to ask “why”. All animals can respond to the questions: What (identifying/recognizing) – was that sound? Where (direction/location) – do I go for shelter? When (time) – I have to go find a mate. Who (other) – do I choose to fight? Which (selection) – is my pack? How (action) – will my cub get food? Only humans ask Why – Why did I act in this manner? Why did I make that choice?

The ability to ask “why” comes from the human capacity for abstract thinking. Whereas animals act in a way that demonstrates what they know in the real world, humans also know without necessarily exerting the effort of doing what they know; the knowing remains in an abstract sense.

6. C=CHOICE: an act of selecting or making a decision when faced with two or more possibilities.
7. De=DECISION: the act or process of deciding; a determination arrived at after consideration: a conclusion.

To Decide: make a choice from a number of alternatives.

8. D=DOING: the activities in which a particular person engages by exerting an effort.

"As nouns the difference between action and doing is that action is something done so as to accomplish a purpose while doing is a deed or action, especially when somebody is held responsible for it.

As interjections the difference between action and doing is that action is demanding or signifying the start of something, usually an act or scene of a theatric performance while doing is the sound made by an elastic object when struck by or striking a hard object.

As verbs the difference between action and doing is that action is (management) to act on a request etc, in order to put it into effect while doing is (do)."

9. M=MOVEMENT: a series of organized activities working toward an objective; an organized effort to promote or attain an end.

Mdu=Movement duration

Mdi=Movment direction

Where there is life, there is movement.

Biologically speaking:

"Without movement, there truly is no life, and it's understandable on a purely biological level. Consider this quote from chiropractor James Chestnut, as published in a 2002 article: 'Blood cells that don't move cannot transport oxygen, lungs that don't move can't breathe, hearts that don't move can't pump blood, and spines that don't move can't create the motion required for proper joint nutrition, for the activities of daily living, or for the stimulation of the joint-brain pathways required for proper brain and body function.' In short, movement is what enables our bodies to operate in all their delicate, wondrous complexity."

Molecularly speaking:

Where there is atmosphere there are molecules that vibrate in response to movement. And knowing whether something is generating noise or moving toward us or away from us, even when we can’t see it has great survival value.

“Thoughtfully” speaking:

Sometimes we’re thinking consciously and sometimes unconsciously. Movement is key “to bring” to consciousness thoughts or any material stored in our subconscious.

The Equation:

Sensation(S) + Perception(P) = Meaning(Mn)

S: Hearing a consistent reassuring tone of voice + P: The voice is consistent; encouraging and supportive = M: It’s safe to venture out. I am not alone. I have support.

Meaning(Mn) {Thinking(T) + Knowing(K)} + Choice(C) = Decision(De)

M: It’s safe to venture out. I am not alone. I have support.{T: I can attempt this. + K: I know how and why I am venturing out.} + C: I will search for a partner for this venture. = De: I will expand my business from local to statewide.

Decision(De) x Doing(D) = Movement(M)

De: I will expand my business from local to statewide. x D: I will seek investors. = M: I will approach investors who have a history with me.

Movement(M){Movement’s duration(Mdu + Movement’s direction(Mdi)} = ACTION

M: I will approach investors who have a history with me. = A: My new partner and I will design a business plan to expand the existing local business to a statewide business and approach investors with whom I have a successful history and would invest in the expansion of the business.

“The entire preoccupation of the physicist is with things that contain within themselves a principle of movement and rest...about its coming into being and its doings and about all its alterations we think that we have knowledge when we know the source of its movement.”
Aristotle, Metaphysics 340BC

I dedicate this buzz to @Ali Anani and his inspirational work and to the discussion with @Franci Hoffman which ensued.

I now add the following image: As seen through the eyes of @Ali Anani. Thank you Dr. Ali for adding this invaluable dimension to the work which you inspired, encouraged and supported.

The beauty of your comment CityVP Manjit for me is that the discussion can go on like the layers of an onion. There is the discussion in science as to the influence of the observer. As well, I have heard those who discuss reaching a point of observing their own meditation. This discussion expands into an area of doing which is beyond the physical. In my buzz, I make the following statement: Whereas animals act in a way that demonstrates what they know in the real world, humans also know without necessarily exerting the effort of doing what they know; the knowing remains in an abstract sense.

In terms of action and meditation - to do and observe is a doing - but not to do and observe is observation, then one is not shaping observation with one's doing, but observing in the fullness - that is what meaningful meditation is, otherwise we engage in a doing called meditation.

Thank you CityVP Manjit, for your comment, perspective and share. I can relate to everything you write. I have one question; how do you see "action and meditation" as distinct from "action and doing"? From my perspective, there is no difference between "movement as it relates to heart, lung and spine" and "sitting with the conception and allowing it to wash over one's mind."

I love the distinction here between action and doing. It further emphasizes for me the distinction between action learning and learning. The biggest challenge I have is in understanding and translating information through a mathematical lens and that simply underscores why mathematics should be taught far more differently to the young - not at all the way it was taught to me. So even conceptually created formula's are challenging for me whereas visual representations of the same thing make things far more accessible for me and so the idea of movement as it relates to heart, lung and spine was meaningful. The value however in conceptual formula (and this is opposite to a formulaic response) is sitting with the conception and allowing it to wash over one's mind. The link then between action and meditation becomes vitally important, even more important than the distinction between action and doing.

I respectfully suggest Mohammed Sultan that perhaps it is not the "integration of the input" that led to a separation of the output and yielded to actions but to the "separation of the reasons". I can only assume that the actions occurring at this stage are isolated from the task at hand.

As always Mohammed Sultan, your wise, insightful comments and experience provides a great contribution to the discussion. For me, the best remark you can offer me is the times you refer to integration, for that is my aim. I am relieved to hear from you that the integration occurred.

That is shear poetry @Mohammed A. Jawad. Thank you very much. Much insight can be found in your 2 lines. I break your whole into quarters of pairs and highlight 3/4: "we cancel ignorance and embrace true illumination", "closer to flawless truths and realities"; "adhere to those truths and take initiatives for realistic action". Thank you.

Thank you @Max Carter for sharing your perspective and for your contribution to the discussion. I have broached this subject from my developmental bias and agree that there is more to discuss. You have brought up drive among other things which are important factors to the "equation". My part 2 is coming up that will expand on this. Thanks again.
