My contribution for this week is the word, light.

Light tomorrow with today!  - Elizabeth Barrett Browning

One of four words in the above quote and the word light evokes a myriad of meanings. It takes pages to write up the definition of light. There are so many ways in which it is used. In each of its categories, the word light is attached to many expressions. I offer this very brief outline.

Noun: something that makes things visible or affords illumination.

Verb: to provide light for (something) or to cause (something) to burn.

Adjective: not dark or deep in color or not heavy, having little weight or less than usual weight.

Adverb: eat light or travel light.

Today, a startling new discovery: prodding the brain with light, a group of scientists got an unexpected surprise -- they were able to turn back on a part of the brain that had been shut down by Alzheimer’s disease

A new technique which traps light at the nanoscale to enable real-time monitoring of individual molecules bending and flexing may aid in our understanding of how changes within a cell can lead to diseases such as cancer.

Bruce Springsteen wrote the song for the movie, Light of Day, 1987. The line in the chorus is very reminiscent of the Elizabeth Barrett Browning quote above: Just around the corner to the light of day.  Both express different sides of the “spectrum”.
